Yttrium was first discovered in 1789 in its oxide form in a quarry in Ytterby, Sweden, which is how it derived its name. It took until 1828 to isolate yttrium metal by heating the oxide with potassium. Yttrium is found naturally in small amounts in the human body and breast milk, and is located primarily in the liver, kidney, spleen, lungs, and bones. Yttrium has several important industrial and medical uses, including to treat some cancers, make stronger glass, and as a component in lasers and precise medical needles. Overexposure to yttrium can cause lung disease and other illnesses.

Yttrium was first disocovered in its oxide form in
1789. It was found in a quarry in Ytterby, Sweden
(hence the name Yttrium). Erbium, Terbium and Ytterbium were also found in this wuarry but not until later. The original discoverer, Johan Gadolin and Gustaf Ekeberg named it Yttria. It took many until the year 1828 for Yttrium metal to first be isolated. Friedrich Wohler heated the oxide with potassium to isolate it. All humans have about 0.5 milligrams of Yttrium in there bodies, mostly located in the liver, kidney spleen, lungs and bones. Breast milk also contains a tiny, tiny amount of Yttrium. Uses : Yttrium is used in certain drugs to help treat cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, ovarian, pancreatic, bone and colorectal cancer. It also makes needles that are more precise than scalpels. Yttrium is a common and useful additive to glass. When added to glass it makes the glass harder and harder to break. Yttrium is used to make bulletproof glass and camera lenses. Yttrium is also a key component in lasers.
