Yttrium was first disocovered in its oxide form in

1789. It was found in a quarry in Ytterby, Sweden


(hence the name Yttrium). Erbium, Terbium and
Ytterbium were also found in this wuarry but not until
later. The original discoverer, Johan Gadolin and
Gustaf Ekeberg named it Yttria. It took many until the
year 1828 for Yttrium metal to first be isolated.
Friedrich Wohler heated the oxide with potassium to
isolate it.
All humans have about 0.5 milligrams of Yttrium
in there bodies, mostly located in the liver, kidney
spleen, lungs and bones. Breast milk also contains a
tiny, tiny amount of Yttrium.
Uses : Yttrium is used in certain drugs to help
treat cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, ovarian,
pancreatic, bone and colorectal cancer. It also makes
needles that are more precise than scalpels.
Yttrium is a common and useful additive to
glass. When added to glass it makes the glass harder
and harder to break. Yttrium is used to make
bulletproof glass and camera lenses.
Yttrium is also a key component in lasers.

Dangers : Overexposure to Yttrium has proved to


cause lung diseae and other illnesses.
