Reflection Paper
My first experience in the field of education was a pleasant one, strengthening my choice
to pursue a degree in the profession. Throughout the day, I watched one of my favorite teachers
in high school connect with students in a way I one day hope to emulate. I do have to admit,
sitting in the back of the class taking notes did get to be a bore, but I took joy in getting to
interact with the students although it was limited. I have always considered myself to be an
above average public speaker and excelled in presentations. After observing rather than being the
student learning, I was able to see how these skills go hand in hand with teaching. The teacher
was able to neatly put together a presentation, taking the students step by step to insure
understanding. She had a clear outlined plan of what was going to be accomplished during her 90
minute period with each class. The experience also allowed me to ask myself crucial questions
about my own personal philosophy of teaching. After disciplining a student, I thought to myself
about how I might handle a similar situation. Additionally, I was able to think deeper about the
role of the teacher and how because of her teaching style, throughout the entire day she only had
to silence one student. The structure of the class simply did not allow for side conversations or
students off task. I want to replicate her structure in my own classroom someday. The students
did not talk out of fear, but more respect. She was able to motivate her students to do the work
and then in turn became self-reinforcing for the students. I hope to be the teacher students love to
ask questions and am always as helpful as I can be. I was able to try and be just that for the

students in her various classes. In each class she would have me introduce myself and then have
me demonstrate a problem or two up on the board, walking the students through it as I went. The
first two periods I was somewhat nervous but the quickly gained confidence and thrived as I was
able to interact with the students and grab their attention and focus. In all, my first field
experience was everything I hoped it would and more. Not only am I sure I still want to continue
on my path to become a teacher, but I now find myself more excited to become the type of
teacher I have grown to appreciate.
