France Finds a Foothold in Canada
-France was a late comer to the land game and I think that sometimes this makes
the nation more aggressive
-Edict of Nantes granted limited tolerance to French Protestants
-Louis XIV was very interested in America
-French depend on Indians for trade of furs, so they were nicer and more tolerant of
each other
-enemy tribes made it hard to get into land so the French are going to be
angry
-Governments neglect to New France may have caused some tension
New France Fans Out

The French littered the land and were free people, which could have gone
against the Indians beliefs
Indians involvement corrupted their culture as well
o Amazing adventures and dangers
Tension between the Spanish, English and French as the French try to protect
their claimed land (needed for fur trade)
o They had control of all along the Mississippi and its valleys

Clash of Empires

King Williams War and Queen Annes War pitted France and British
o Indians took sides depending on trade
o Spain would ally with the French
Peace for a while so Britain neglected its American colonies
o Set the stage for a taste for independence
Britain and Spain still have tension when British start to trade in Spanish
America
o Resulted in the War of Jenkins Ear
o Soon merged with King Georges War (War of Austrian Succession)
France and Spain allied but the British captured Louisburg
Peace treaty gave Louisburg back to French & enraged the New Englanders
o French still had a lot of power

George Washington Inaugurates War with France

French and British fought over the Ohio River Valley


o Important for the westward push of the British and French wanted it to
stay in trading power
o 1749 British got 500,000 acres but French setting up forts (Fort
Duquesne)
George Washington sent to secure Virginians claims (he was
lieutenant colonel)
o Virginians fired the first shots of the new war in a forest near Fort
Duquesne
French made Washington and his troops surrender & walk away
at Fort Necessity
British uproot 4,000 French (Acadians) and move them to the south in fear of
French anger

Global War and Colonial Disunity

The French and Indian War was the first of the Anglo-French Wars to start in
America
o Started by George Washington and called the Seven Years War
o In Europe: Britain and Prussia v France, Spain, Austria and Russia
Fredrick the Great in Germany
o French wasted money in Europe so not strong in America
In past fights, America had lacked unity
o Intercolonial congress called to Albany, New York 1754 to get some
unity
o Franklins suggestions for home rule was not accepted
Too much independence for London regime, but not enough for
colonists

Braddocks Blundering and Its Aftermath

General Edward Braddock sent over to Virginia (officer experienced in


European war)
o Set out to capture Fort Duquesne with untrained men
o British torn apart by the French and Indians and Indians furious
Attack the whole frontier (George Washington defends)
British invade Canada in 1756 but strategy was wrong
o Aimed at small outposts instead of Quebec and Montreal so sucked dry
from defeats

Pitts Palms of Victory

British brought forth William Pitt, an admired man who was a great orator
o Became leader in the London government
o Refocuses on Canada with young leaders
Takes Louisburg and Quebec from French

Battle of Quebec and defeat of Montreal crushed French power in North


America
o Ceded to Spain all trans-Mississippi Louisiana and New Orleans
o Great Britain emerged as the dominate power in North America

Restless Colonists

America has confidence in its military strength and shattered Britain as


invincible
o Friction had developed between professional soldiers and amateurs
British detested them, settlers believed they had risked their
lives
Americans reluctant to support British common cause
o Illegally made trading routes with French and Spanish
Still had colonial disunity (many didnt want to fight to protect themselves)
o Mainly from huge geographical distances
o Sometimes from conflicting religions or nationalities
o Dif. Governments, boundaries or hate to aristocrats
o Wars encouraged some form of unity
Started to realize they are all Americans

Wars Fateful Aftermath

The defeat of France gave Americans more of a sense of independence


o France hoped that by losing their American empire, the British would
too
o Spain and Indians threat reduced (Indians lost diplomatic power)
Spain still owes a lot of west and Louisiana
Pontiacs uprising was led by the Ottawa chief Pontiac in 1763
o Siege to Detroit because he felt the weak position of the Indians with
no French
o Gave blankets with smallpox to Indians and a truce ensued
o Would stabilize relations and put troops at the frontier
Proclamation of 1763 by the London gov.
o Banned settlement in area beyond Appalachians
o Meant to help with Indian conflicts
o Angered Americans so they didnt listen and moved west
Also had a new sense of destiny
o British running out of patience
