Essay Question: Discuss and analyze the development of

Democracy since Greece and Rome.

Jean Jacques Rousseau said good government is created by the free will of the
people (Hook). It has taken more than 3,810 years to perfect the style of

government we call democracy (Historical Background). Democracy had its

beginnings in Greece and Rome. The English people struggled with their kings and
queens to achieve democratic rule before many of the principles of democracy were
solidified during the Enlightenment (Three Themes). Democracy is a style of
government that is created by the people to protect all peoples rights equally and
do their will. (Thesis Statement)
Ancient Greece and Rome made two major contributions to democracy.
(Topic Sentence) The Greeks are the inventors of direct democracy (Fact #1).
Three major leaders, Solon, Cleisthenes, and Pericles gave more people power in
their government by creating councils and paid public positions (Analysis #1).
Rome had an equally important contribution with written legal codes (Fact #2). The
first Roman legal code was the Twelve Tables and later Justinian created his own
code of law. Each code assured all citizens equal protection under the law
(Analysis #2). Greece and Rome are given credit for starting democracy by
increasing peoples participation in government and creating written legal codes
(Closing Statement).
