Discourse Community Response

In my community idiom there are multiple components that come together to effectively
transfer a message and I have grown to learn a plethora of ways to be effective in the diverse
communication areas of my life. Many elements play a role towards my interaction within the
four major areas of my community: College, family and friends, dance, and work, are the most
important in my daily life. Throughout the areas of my community we speak different languages,
different forms, and refer to each other differently.
In my UTEP community the most effective method of communication is to be formal and
polite to transmit messages between professors, classmates, and other UTEP staff efficiently.
Formal communication is required since significant material is being shared. Referring to each
other formally and structured with the different individuals of UTEP has helped communication
to be effective. Strict communication has to be present, we cant be conversing about my tuition
and cracking jokes at the same time because this may provoke misunderstandings. In order to
become a UTEP student I had to personally go to UTEP to take the Texas Success Initiative test,
apply online and include all my personal information, activities and background. After the
information was processed, I had to go to the Mike Loya building and pay for school. Interaction
with different individuals is vital in UTEP since it is a different environment from my 200 senior
class school, different classes and classmates every time and the assignments are announced
through Blackboard.
My comfort zone in the communication area is within my family and friends. My family
is open-minded and we share the liberty to express ourselves without the fear of affecting or
offending anyone. Due to my familys border Hispanic background we speak Spanglish around
the house. Being born the baby out of my brother and my sister gave me the advantage of my

parents being more lenient with the way I approach them. Ironically my sister and my brother
believe I have to be more respectful towards them since they are older than I am. My family is
friendly and open for outsiders to join. In order to join my family you primarily must be born
into the family, married to a family member or simply accepted as a new family member. My
close friends are the ones who have been accepted to the family. Communication with my friends
has no boundaries of having to be professional or any type of classification of that sort.
Communication takes a further step with my friends since we do not only have face-to-face
communication but we also use the 21st century way of communication, technology. Technology
is the main form of transferring information between my friends and myself, from social media
to cellphone texts. My friends are always texting me to find more information about dance
workshops.
Dance community language is used distinctively opening oneself inclining to the soul
rather than literal words, to extensively communicate to the eye of the beholder. Body language
speaks louder than words providing the inner experience of the artist portraying movements of
their emotion creating a story of diverse genres as an open response. In my high school years
dance played a major role in my life, it helped me relax, release endorphins and disconnect from
the world. Besides from the spiritual pros dancing had for me I was part of the Missionette dance
team that influenced me to make dance part of my life not only my afternoons. To be able to join
the Missionette dance team I had to attend to dance workshops where I met several talented girls
which I had to communicate with in a friendly polite manner since they were strangers. Inside
the auditorium during our audition we had to say our name and number to the judges
professionally without inappropriate language. Once you are admitted, dance goes through your

veins and into your heart. In UTEP I am attending to one dance class to embrace the history of
dance and comprehend it is not only about the movement but something beyond.
Family Dollar community I had to apply online and wait a couple of weeks for the
manager to call me. The manager spoke to me professionally and not like one of her peers. After
my application got accepted I had an interview with the store manager. The interview was in one
room with me and two other people. During the interview I had to use proper language to talk
about myself. Communication with the store manager and assistant store manager was effective,
I got the job and started training right away. On the job training there was a guideline I had to
follow while speaking to a customer. The guideline I had to apply is triggered to persuade the
customer to buy more items and make them return to the store further in life. The first two weeks
of training went as I expected my position was set in stone as a greeter, cashier, and stocker.
The transition through the different areas in my community all differ in the type of
communication that is being exposed. Formal and Informal structures are the ones I have used in
order to transmit a message with the variety of individuals. Time is changing and many new
forms of communication are floating upon to create new ways to connect individuals.
Communication has positively benefit my life to make the most out of my present experiences.
