itsreallyeasytodo.Youlllearnhowtopixelateyourphoto,createabrickpattern
andoverlayitontopofyourphoto,andcompressthebricksintoalimitedcolor

Duplicatethelayersothatyouhaveabackupcopy.Youcanduplicateyourlayer
bypressingCtrl/Cmd+J.RenamethislayertoBricks.Rightclickonthenewlayer
thenselectConverttoSmartObject.ByconvertingthelayerintoaSmartObject,
wecanapplySmartFilterswhichgiveyoutheoptionofchangingyoursettingsata
latertime.

Step3
Next,gotoFilter>Pixelate>Mosaic.AdjusttheCellSizesettinguntilyoucan
barelymakeouttheimage.Thissettingwilldeterminethesizeofyourbricks.
Rememberthecellsizesettingbecausewellneeditforthenextstep.

Createanewdocument(Ctrl/Cmd+NorFile>New)withthesamewidthandheight
asthecellsizesettingyouusedearlier.Forexample,ifyouusedtheMosaicFilter
withacellsizeof64square,thenyouwouldcreateanew6464pixelsdocument.

PressShift+BackspaceorgotoEdit>FilltoopentheFilltool.Inthedropdown
menu,select50%GraythenclickOK.

Yourdocumentwillbefilledwith50%gray.

SelecttheEllipsetool(U)thencreateacircleinthecenter(thecolorofthecircle
doesntmatter).Youcancreateaperfectcirclebyholdingtheshiftkey.Switchto
theMovetool(V)topositionitinthecenterofyourdocument.

Nowweregoingtoturncreateabevelfromthecircleusinglayerstyles.Goto
Layer>LayerStyle>BlendingOptions.Setthefillopacityto0thiswillmake
everythingbutyourlayerstylesinvisible.

SelectandcheckmarktheBevel&Embosslayerstyle.SetthetechniquetoChisel
Hardthenadjustthesizesothatyougetabevelthicknesslikeshownintheimage
below.Youcanalsoadjusttheshadinganglewhichis120bydefaultIchanged
mineto90.

Next,enabletheDropShadowlayerstyle.SettheDistanceto0pxthenadjustthe
sizesothatitlooksliketheimagebelow.ClickOKtoapplythelayerstyleswhen
youredone.

Step8
Weredonecreatingthebuttoninthecenterofthebrick.Next,welladdasubtle
beveltotheouteredgeofthebrick.Todothis,weregoingtoapplyalayerstyleto
thebackgroundlayer,butbeforewecandothat,weneedtoconvertthe
Backgroundlayerintoaregularlayer.Youcandothisbydoubleclickingthe
backgroundlayerorrightclickingandchoosingLayerfromBackground.

RightclickontheBackgroundlayerthenchooseBlendingOptions.Enablethe
Bevel&EmbossoptionthensettheTechniquetoChiselHardandSizeto12px
(sothatitlookssimilartotheimagebelow).Ifthebevellookstoostrong,youcan
lowertheHighlight/ShadowOpacitysettingonthebottom.ClickOKtoapplythe
layerstyles.

Step9
Nowweneedtoturnthisimageintoapattern.GotoEdit>DefinePattern.Nameit
anythingthenclickOK.

Closethecurrentdocumentwithoutsavingandswitchbacktoyourmain
Photoshopdocument.CreateanewPatternadjustmentlayerbyclickingonthe
NewAdjustmentLayerbuttoninyourLayerspanelthenselectingPattern.

SelectthebrickpatternthenclickOK.

Step11
ChangetheblendingmodeofyourlayertoLinearLight.Youllnowhaveabrick
imageandthisiswhatyourphotowilllooklikeifbrickscameineverycolorand
shade.

Becausebricksdontcomeineverycolorandshade,weneedtocompressittoa
morelimitedcolorpalette.Welldothiswithtwolayersonetoaffectthetoneand
theotherforthecolor.InyourLayerspanel,clickontheNewAdjustmentLayer
buttonthenselectPosterize.MovethislayerbelowyourPatternFilllayerthen
changetheblendingmodetoLuminosity.TheLuminosityblendmodeprevents
yourlayerfromaffectingthecolorsinyourimage.

AdjusttheLevelssettingtoanywherefrom48.

Step13

Nowweneedtocompressthesaturationofthecolorstoamorelimitedrange.To
dothis,createanewredSolidColorfilllayerbyclickingontheNewAdjustment
LayerbuttoninyourLayerspanelandselectingSolidColor.

PickanycolorthensettheS(Saturation)to75%andB(Brightness)to100%.The
H(Hue)canbeanycolor.ClickOK.

MovethislayerbelowyourPatternfilllayerthensetthelayerblendingmodeto
Saturation.

FinalResults
Heresthefinalresults!YoucanadjusttheopacityofyourPosterizelayerifyou
needtobringbackmoretoneintotheimage.

IfyouwantyourbrickphototolookmoreliketheofficialLegoPhotoapp,simply
changetheblendingmodeofyourPosterizelayertoNormal.
