I guess I can understand this with how a student would have to "try hard" not to learn something. If it
went against their beliefs, religion, etc.

By trying not to learn English, he experienced other things. The same could go for students who refuse
to learn in my classroom (hopefully that doesn't happen though).

It would be useful to have the same experience, so I would know how to reach out to my future students

Moral of story: KNOW YOUR STUDENTS. Take the time to get to know them and try to reach them.
You won't be punished for trying.
