* Mendeley won't let me highlight* But, I can see how his grandfather would be scared. He doesn't
want his future generations to learn English and forget their native culture.

Common misconception for those who refuse to learn anything; can be interpreted as a fear of failing

I understand his unwilling-ness to not want to learn English, but if he is in an English-speaking area, I
don't know why he wouldn't be more open to it.

In some way, I view it as stubborn-ness, but I wouldn't pass judgement on someone who didn't want to
learn

Its our jobs, as teachers, to work in whatever scenario students give us.

I guess I can understand this with how a student would have to "try hard" not to learn something. If it
went against their beliefs, religion, etc.

Oh wow. That really put it into prespective!

By trying not to learn English, he experienced other things. The same could go for students who refuse
to learn in my classroom (hopefully that doesn't happen though).

It would be useful to have the same experience, so I would know how to reach out to my future students
if they decide to not learn. I feel like reading about it, limits my ability to actually reach out to students
successfully.

Very well-written. Helped me see it at a better prespective.

Although this story is funny for book-reading. I do not think its okay to do that in a real classroom setting
to humiliate a student out of their habit to not want to learn.

That's why it is important to reach out to your students!!

I wish I had the power of learning the material so easily, that paying attention in class wouldn't be
needed. (more in science classes, not Smudde's! I ALWAYS listen :) )

But how to you get to that Point A, to Point B?

But teachers may not all have the ability to "trick their students out of it"

I was going to say.....do any of these kids look back and think, "wow, I missed out on a lot"?

But that is just so disrespectful. Don't hate on those trying to help you. I don't understand that. And that
scares me for the future.

I would have totally answered their challenges. Its teachers who are too scared to be outspoken by their
students.

How far should a teacher let it go on without it affecting the other student's learning time?

It is interesting that I wouldn't have noticed the words "his" or "he". I guess I just know the power I have
as a woman and I am not offended by those references.

And we as teachers should be open to that "Change"

Moral of story: KNOW YOUR STUDENTS. Take the time to get to know them and try to reach them.
You won't be punished for trying.
