WALT : HOW SOUND WAVES ARE REFLECTED?

WILF:

ALL must
Able to explain how the
sound reflects.

Most should
Be able to analyze the
reflection of sound.

Some could
Be able to interpret the
reflection of sound.

STARTER:
Why sound cannot travel
through vacuum?
A The particles in vacuum are
very rigid
B vacuum is a completely
empty space, so oscillations can
never happen
C Vacuum has very less
particles

Reflection of sound
waves
Sound waves are reflected by hard
surfaces like wall. Reflection of sound
waves can result in an echo or
reverberation.
An echo is a reflected sound that we can
hear for a short time after the original
sound.
A reverberation occurs due to multiple
reflections from walls, ceilings etc.,
(especially in an empty room) within a very
short time of the original sound

Reflection of sound
waves
A simple experiment to demonstrate the
reflection of sound
Sound
is clearly heard when it is reflected
at the same angle.

Reflection of sound
An echo is a reflected sound wave.
Question:
A misguided child shouts Chelsea!
at a nearby cliff and hears an echo
1.4 s later. How far away is the
cliff?
Take the speed of sound = 340
m/s.

distance, D

The sound travels to and from the cliff, a total

distance of 2D
speed = distance / time
becomes: distance = speed x time
= 340 m/s x 1.4 s
= 476 m
= 2D !
Therefore distance to the cliff = 238 m.
