Book Review The one minute

manager
One minute might look like a very short time but a lot of things can
happen within this short span of time. Ask a football team who lost the
match because the opponent scored the winning goal in the extra minute,
you will know.
The book The one minute manager written by Kenneth Blanchard, Ph.D.
and Spencer Johnson, M.D. published by William Collins (Willow Books) in
1983 delves into this aspect: the power of one minute.
When I glanced at this book in the library there are many things that
caught my attention, The short book that has big results itched at the
front cover, Increased productivity, profits, and your own prosperity that
is strategically placed at the top of the cover and many more short witty
sayings that spurred my interest in this book.
The genre of this book differs from any other management success book.
This book blends the quality of fiction with management with panache.
The characteristics of this book are as follows:

A simple narrative with a pedantic plot.

An aim at communicating common sense wisdom for the business
world.
Lots of motivational slogans that can be used as posters for
prosperity.

Written thirty years ago, this New York Times best seller follows the
adventures of a young man in search of the greatest management model
in the universe. Some of the people he came across are focussed on the
people but not on the work but others focus on work and screw people
over. That is until he discovers the One minute Manager. Here is some of
the advice that he provides him.
1. Have employees write out a 250 word summary of their goals which
the manager keeps with him. This helps in clarifying things clear the
air and ambiguity.
2. The one minute praise- Catch your employees doing something right
and specifically praise them for that action and let them know how
valuable they are to the company.
3. The one minute reprimand- when employees do something wrong,
immediately reprimand them for that action, through put in the
context of their overall good work.

This is all helpful advice in managing people. That way, there are clear
objectives, feel valued and know where they screw up without the anger
building-up in the manager. This is the entire substance of this book.
