Investigation Escape
In the town of Decford a prison has 10 cells. All the cells have one prisoner in them and all the
cell doors are locked.

A jailer walks from cell 1 to cell 10 and unlocks each door.

The jailer returns to the start and locks every second door.
The jailer returns to the start and changes the state of every third
door (ie. cells 3, 6, 9). Changes the state of a door means lock
if unlocked or unlock if locked.
The jailer repeats the process for every fourth door then fifth door,
sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and finally tenth.
(a) How many prisoners can now escape through an unlocked door? Write down the cell
numbers of those prisoners who can escape.
(b) The prison in the city of Centford has 100 cells. A jailer repeats the above process from
changing the state of every door then every second door, etc to changing the state of
every 100th door. How many prisoners can now escape through an unlocked door? Write
down the cell numbers of those prisoners who can escape. Can you explain why these cell
doors are unlocked at the end?
(c) If the process was repeated for 1000 cells, how many prisoners would be able to escape
through the unlocked doors?
