PHYSICS 421:PROBLEM SET #01

15/16

001
Solve the following constant velocity problems
a. A cheetah that runs 140 meters in 5 seconds at a constant speed. Calculate that speed it m/s.
b. A fast ball from the pitcher travels the 60'6" (18.4-m) from the mound to home plate with an
average speed of 85-mi/h (37.7-m/s). Calculate how long the batter gets to see the ball before
it's by him?
c. Normal walking speed is about 1.3-m/s (3mi/h). Calculate the distance you can walk in the 5minutes between classes.
002
a. Calculate the average speed (in km/h) of Charlie, who runs to the store 4 kilometers away in
30 minutes.
b. Calculate the distance (in km) that Charlie runs if he maintains this average speed for 1 hour.
003
Solve the following constant / average speed problems.
a. Calculate how far a cart, with a constant speed of 0.50-m/s, moves in 10-s?
b. Solve for the time for an object whose speed is 0.10-m/s to move 100-m.
c. A body moves from position #1 to #2, in two stages. The average speed for the entire trip,
24-m, is 0.40-m/s. Suppose the first stage is 6.0-m and the time for the second stage is 40-s.
004
Solve for the average speed in each of the following: An object
a. moves 20-m in 4.0-s; then 28-m in 2.0-s.
b. has a speed of 4.0-m/s for 6.0-s; then 19-m/s for 4.0-s.
c. moves 50-m at a speed of 5.0-m/s; then 2.0-m with a speed of 8.0-m/s.
005
A certain cheetah can run full out with a speed of 30-m/s for 8.0-s. He takes off and catches the
gazelle after 210-m. Suppose he does the first 150-m in 6.0-s and the last part at full speed.
a. Compute the cheetah's average speed during the first 6.0-s and
b. the time for him to run the last part.
006
Logan Lutz and Nigel Armbruster are 20-km apart riding bikes toward each other. As they start
there is a pesky bee buzzing around Logan that takes off when Logan does and heads straight
toward Nigel at a constant 25-Km/h. Logan and Nigel peddle their bikes toward each other at a
constant 10-Km/h. When the bee reaches Nigel it immediately turns and heads back toward
Logan; reaches Logan then right back toward Nigel and so on until Logan and Nigel pass each
other at which point the bee flies away. What total distance did the bee fly while passing back
and forth between Nigel and Logan?
