YEAR 8 ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS, & MIXTURES LESSON PLAN

Lesson Plan
Stage 1 Desired Results
Content Standard(s):
Cambridge Secondary 1 Science Stage 8
8Cp6 Distinguish between elements, compounds, and mixtures
Unpacked Standard(s):

Describe the physical makeup of elements,

compounds, and mixtures

Describe the chemical makeup of elements,

compounds, and mixtures

Identify examples of compounds, elements, and

mixtures

List the differences and similarities between

compounds, elements, and mixtures

Describe the movement of particles in elements,

compounds, and mixtures

Separate compounds from mixtures of compounds

Essential Questions:

How do we describe the difference between pure

substances (elements and compounds) and
mixtures?

How can a broad knowledge of elements,

compounds, and mixtures be of benefit at home?

What kinds of jobs or hobbies require and

understanding of elements, compounds, and
mixtures.

Students will set their own personal goals by. (Module 3)

Students were given the rubric, their pre-test, and 10 minutes to come up with at least two goals for this unit. After
the ten minutes was up, students got into pairs and discussed how their goals differed or lined up with their partners.
Finally they were given the opportunity to add to their list based on the discussions had with their partners. Students
were also asked to rank their goals in order of importance to themselves. On the board, I showed them how I had
unpacked the standard as an additional reference tool.
Progress on students' personalized goals will be monitored by(Module 5)

Rules and Procedures (Module 5)

Enter the classroom slowly and with caution
Do not touch any projects or experiments that are not yours
Follow all posted rules and safety procedures
Follow all lesson specific rules and procedures
Be honest

(Module 3)
Elements Compounds and Mixtures Pre-Test
1. Chemicals can be elements or compounds. Write down the chemicals
below. Circle the compounds and underline the elements.
Water (H2O)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Hydrogen (H2)
Helium (He)
Magnesium (Mg)
2. For any items you circle above, explain how you can tell it is a
compound.
3. If I gave you a beaker of salt water, could you separate the salt from
this solution? How?
4. What is the difference between a solute and a solvent?
5. What is the difference between homogeneous mixture and a
heterogeneous mixture?

Stage 3 Learning Plan Directly Aligned to Content Standard AND Assessments

Learning Activities: (Module 4)
1. Science in the news- (10 minutes) I present a choice of three current news stories from reliable online sources. One
story will be presented to introduce the topic of elements, mixtures, and compounds. (Connection, Curiosity,
Coherence, Context)
2. Demonstration- (15 minutes) Students observe and compare the properties of an iron/sulfur mix with the product of a
reaction between the elements. The mixture should be heated strongly until it begins to react. Show that the formation of a mixture is
physical in nature whereas the formation of a compound is a chemical reaction. (Concentration)
3. Group Task- (20 minutes) Students are to choose from two different solutions to separate by evaporation. Saline solution and
lime water will be used. (Coaching, Curiosity)

YEAR 8 ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS, & MIXTURES LESSON PLAN

4. Historical Perspective- (10 Minutes) Students view a short slide show of breakthroughs in product development stemming from
manipulation of elements compounds and mixtures. Student pairs work to create their own ideas of products and services that can be
made from elements, compounds, and mixtures. (10 minutes) (Context, Curiosity, Connection, Coherence)

Stage 4 Feedback Strategies, including Timeliness (Module 5)

1. Goal Check
2. The like Button
3. Notebook Grading
4. Exit Tickets
