High Level Cognitive Demands

A: Doing Mathematics
This task requires applying real life situations to solve a subtraction problem. It is necessary to
utilize previous experiences and background knowledge to solve this problem.
B: Procedures with Connections
In this task students have to make mathematical connections by using words or pictures to
explain their answers. This is utilizing multiple representations of the explanation of how the
problem was solved.
C: Procedures with Connections
This task implies making connections amongst the two different problems with place value
addition, and subtraction. The students have to find the relationship between the two and
comparing them and explaining their solutions.
I: Doing Mathematics
Students are required to use cognitive effort because they their own way of solving this problem
to connect the ages between the grandmother and mother. Complex thinking is required to find a
way to explain their solutions to younger students.
J: Procedures with Connections
In this task it is expected to find a correct solution by solving the problem with either subtraction
or addition. Once the student finds this solution they have to explain their reasoning and analyze
the problem.
Low Level Cognitive Demands
D: Memorization
This problem uses routine methods to solve. There are no connections or explanations that are
required. It uses previously learned procedures.
E: Memorization
In this task it is using the traditional routine and learned procedures. There is no cognitive effort,
explanations, or connections necessary.

F: Memorization
This task is very similar to Task E, it requires no cognitive effort, explanations, or connections
and uses the traditional routines taught.
G: Procedures without Connections
This task is a non-routine method. It focuses on finding the correct answer and does not need
any explanation
H: Memorization
This uses memorization of previously learned procedures. It does not require connections or
relation to other concepts.
K: Procedures without Connections
This task is focused on the procedure and finding the correct answer.
L: Procedures without Connections
Looking at this task can seem like it would be extreme at first but once you fully read the
problem the student will realize they are simply explain how they would solve this problem.
This can apply previously learned procedures.
