Problem 1.
Let (G, ) be a group and let a, b G. Prove that

(i) ord(a) = ord bab1 .

(ii) ord(ab) = ord(ba) = ord a1 b1 .
Problem 2. (Multiplicative group of integers modulo n)
Let n N, n > 2 and let
U (Zn ) := {[r]n : 1 6 r 6 n 1, gcd(r, n) = 1}.
Prove that
(i) U (Zn ) is an Abelian group of order (n) with n as the binary operation
on U (Zn ).
(ii) U (Zn ) = Zn when n is a prime.
(iii) Is U (Zn ) always cyclic ?
Problem 3. (Order preserving automorphisms of R)
Let f : R R is an automorphism that preserves the order. Prove that, for
some c > 0
f (x) = cx, for all x R.
Problem 4.
Prove that
(i) Any finitely generated subgroup of Q is cyclic.
(ii) Q and Q Q are not isomorphic.
Remark : It can be shown that R is isomorphic to R R and C to C C.
