LEUKOPLAKIA

dr. Idrianti Idrus SpKK, MKes

Definition
Leukoplakia is a clinical term that
reverse to a predominantly white
lesion of the oral mucosa that cannot
be rubbed of or characterized by any
other definable lesion or known
disease

Oral leukoplakia (OL) is the

most common precancerous
lesion of the oral mucosa, with
the potential to became oral
squamous cell carcinoma
(OSCC)

Epidemiology

- Prevalence is 0,2 % to 5 %.
- Approximately 50% OSCC are
associated with precancerous lesions

Etiology
Risk factor :
Tobacco product
Concomitant alcohol use
History of previous OSCC or
premalignant lesion
Infection with certain human
papilomavirus sub types
Candidiasis

Clinical Findings
There`s two types :
1. Homogenous OL
mostly white, flat, uniform lesion that may
have shallow cracks and smooth,
wrinkled, or corrugated surface that is
consistent throught
2. Non homogenous OL
as a mostly white or white and red lesion
(erythroleukoplakia)that may be either
irregular and flat, nodular(speckled),
ulcerative or verrucous

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

Prognosis
The rate of malignant transformation of
OL into OSCC has been found to vary
from almost 0% to 20% in 1 to 30 years.
The annual malignant transformation
rate of OL is unlikely to exceed 1%.

Treatment
There is no consensus on the most
appropriate treatment for OL.
