MOUNT VERNON - A social club deemed illegal by city officials Friday defied orders to close
and tried to reopen again early yesterday, police said.

"Some people might think that this is a small situation, but this is a quality-of-life issue that
affects our neighborhoods," Police Commissioner David Chong said. "History tells us that
having an unsafe premises can result in deadly consequences."

Police went to Club 914 on Third Avenue on Friday night after learning the club had been
advertising an all-weekend party.

Chong said the club had no liquor license, nor a certificate of occupancy from the city's
Buildings Department.

Officials ordered the place closed Friday night. Police said officers visited again just minutes
after midnight Saturday to find that the club had reopened.

Chong said police found several exposed electrical wires that could have been a serious safety
risk to the 168 people inside.

City officials again closed the building, and police seized all the alcohol inside.

Arrested were the club's owner, Derrick O. Williams, 45, of New Rochelle and bartender Andrea
White, 35, of Mount Vernon.

Chong said Williams and White were charged with operating an unlicensed premises.
