i) Anaerobic pond
ii) Facultative pond
3. Sketch the layout diagrams for an oxidation ditch and oxidation pond?(3m)
4. What is the difference in function between an oxidation ditch and an oxidation pond?(3m)
5. State the advantages and disadvantages of oxidation pond.

Answers

1. Facultative lagoon in the pond sequence functions like the primary clarifier of a
conventional sewage treatment system. Heavy solids will settle to the bottom of the lagoon
and lighter solids will float. This facultative lagoon lacks the sludge removal capability of
primary clarifier, so a population of anaerobic organism will colonized.
2. i) Anaerobic pond is a deep pond in which oxygen is absent except at water surface layer.
The microbes present are anaerobes and facultative bacteria.
ii) Facultative pond is a pond in which both aerobes, anaerobes and facultative bacteria are
all present at different depths of water.

3. Oxidation ditch

Oxidation pond

4.
Oxidation ditch
For w/w containing excess nitrogen and
w/w of moderate strength

Oxidation pond
Only for low BOD such as sewage

5.
advantages
Low capital, operation and maintenance
cost
Less sensitive to shock loading
Simplicity in design and construction

disadvantages
Large land requirement for pond
Difficult to control or predict ammonia level
in effluent
May cause odour problem if not designed
properly
