Greetings from the Reading Room!

As September comes to an end and October begins, we are underway in the

reading room. Students are working on becoming fluent readers and growing a love of
reading.

TIPS FOR BECOMING A FLUENT READER:

1. Pacing: fluent readers read at a just right rate! They dont speed through a
text like a racecar; and they dont plod through the text like a turtle. Fluent
readers read like we talk, and they know when to speed up or slow down for
effect!
2. Phrasing: Fluent readers can read several words together (phrases), but they
also know when to pause and take a breath. They view periods, exclamation
points, and question marks as stop signs. They also know that they pause
after commas, ellipses, dashes, colons, and semi-colons!
3. Accuracy: fluent readers read text correctly. They know a lot of sight words
that help them read without hesitating. Fluent readers also know a lot of
other words. If they come across new words, they use word parts to decode
and read.
4. Expression: fluent readers do not read like robots! They use their voice to
show emotions like anger, sadness, and happiness! They sometimes change
their voices to sound like characters in books.
