UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FINAL EXAMINATION, APRIL 2008 MIE 516: COMBUSTION AND FUELS Examiner: M.J. Thomson ‘Attempt all questions. You are allowed one sheet of notes. The value of the questions given in parentheses. Show your work. Circle your answers. 1. (30%) Aneight-cylinder diesel engine bums #2 fuel oil and 100% excess air. The fuel, API=32, has an ultimate analysis of 86.4% carbon, 12.7% hydrogen, 0.4% sulfur, 0.3% oxygen and 0.3% nitrogen. The engine is rated at a maximum brake power output of 3890 kW and a brake specific fuel consumption of 0.173 kg/kW-hr. For these conditions, calculate: a) The FA ratio (mass basis) b) Fuel consumption ©) Brake thermal efficiency 2. (25%) A spark ignition IC engine with a compression ratio of 9:1 runs on hydrogen and air at an equivalence ratio of 1. The initial charge intake temperature is 25C and atmospheric pressure. Use the ideal air standard Otto engine analysis and use the thermodynamic properties of air at 25C and gamma = 1.4. Calculate: a) Temperature after compression b) Peak temperature 3, (25%) In the design of a boiler, it has been calculated that a stable flame will exist at 1427C, with initial mole fractions of Na and O> (meaning after complete fuel combustion but before any NOx formation) in the flame of 0.73 and 0.05 respectively a) Assuming these conditions hold for 0.2 seconds, calculate the NO concentration (ppm). ‘Assume that reverse reactions can be neglected (i.e. [NO] is very small) 4. (20%) a) For automobiles i) Name a compression ignition technology that reduces NOx emissions ii) How does it do this? b) In 2005, Canada reduced the sulfur in gasoline fuel from a maximum of 350 ppm to 30 ppm. What was the main reason for doing this? Be sure to state the most important pollutant or pollutants this would impact.
