Equipment

DNA extraction buffer

Strawberry
Cheesecloth
Distilled water
Paper cup

15 ml screw-cap conical bottom plastic centrifuge tube

Plastic transfer pipette

Glass rod or popsicle stick

Ethanol
Salt solution

Strawberry DNA Extraction

Cut off stem

Place strawberry in freezer bag and mash the strawberry
Pour 15 ml of buffer in the bag and mush together for a minute
Put cheesecloth over beaker and pour the strawberry mixture into
the filter to separate the solid from the liquid
5. Once filtered through pour 2 ml into the conical tube
6. Hold the tube at an angle and use the pipette to slowly pour 5 ml of
ethanol in the tube. Let sit for 3 minutes
7. Use the popsicle stick to remove the DNA

Results
The DNA from the strawberry was extracted into
the ethanol, floating in a strand somewhere near
the middle.

Saliva DNA Extraction

1. Swish salt solution in mouth for 1 minute, then spit it into the cup.
2. Put the detergent solution into the test tube, then add the salt
solution and saliva from the cup.
3. Gently rock the tube back and forth for 2 minutes.
4. Hold the tube at an angle and use the pipette to slowly pour 5 ml of
ethanol in the tube. Let sit for 3 minutes.

5. Use popsicle stick to remove DNA.

Results
The DNA was transferred to another, smaller,
plastic tube to be made more visible. The
DNA is gathered at the top of the ethanol in
a small strand.
