The document describes the experimental procedure used at the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute's Central Labs in Cairo for performing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) according to an ASTM standard practice. Potassium bromide (KBr) is dried and ground into a fine powder. Samples are dried and ground with KBr before being pressed into a homogeneous 13 mm disc for FTIR analysis using a Perkin Elmer Spectrum One spectrometer over a wavelength range of 400-4000 cm-1 with 16 scans at a resolution of 4.

FTIR of samples was performed according to ASTM E 1252-(02) Standard Practice for General Techniques for Obtaining Infrared Spectra for Qualitative Analysis. Using FTIR Perkin Elmer-Spectrum One Range 400-4000 cm-1 No of Scans: 16 Resolution: 4 According to the following procedure 1) KBr (spectroscopic grade is place in oven for about two hours at 105 oC to eliminate of moisture. 2) Dried KBr is grinded into fine powder. 3) KBr is put in a 13 mm Die, then pressed at a suitable pressure (usually 8 ton) to form a Homogenous pressed 13 mm KBr disc. 4) An empty KBr disc is used as a blank to perform a background scan 5) A very small amount, of the sample, was dried @ 40 oC for 48 hours. Note that any volatile components of a mixture will be lost in this process Then grinded with solid KBr. KBr is put in a 13 mm Die, then pressed at a suitable pressure (usually 8 ton) to form a Homogenous pressed 13 mm KBr disc.
