as a content supplier for Zee TV -
India's first Hindi satellite channel. Subash Chandra was the first
in India who sought to harness the huge business potential of
satellite television channels. Before the launch of Zee TV viewers
in India were under the firm grip of Doordarshan, the state-
controlled terrestrial network. It was Subhash Chandra's vision
that helped give birth to the satellite TV industry in India and
inspired others to follow suit.
After the launch of Zee TV, he commenced Siticable operations in
1995 and also started a joint venture with News Corp. In 1995, he
launched two new channels, Zee News and Zee Cinema. In 2000,
Zee TV became the first cable company in India to launch Internet
over Cable services. In 2003, Zee TV became the first service
provider in India to launch Direct to Home (DTH) services. In a
short span of time Zee TV has become a big media and has give
tough competition to international media moghuls such as Rupert
Murdoch.
Subhash Chandra's meteoric rise in the past decade is somewhat
similar to the rise of Dhirubhai Ambani in 1980s and 1990s.
India's leading media mogul Subhash Chandra was a one-time
rice trader in Haryana and is credited with launching India's
satellite television revolution. His other business interests include

Chandra was born on 30th November 1950, in Hisar, Haryana.
He left his studies after completing his 12th. He went on to start
his own vegetable oil unit when he was only nineteen years old
and soon ventured into export of food grains. In 1981, his visit to
a packaging exhibition led him to set up Essel Packaging Limited.
It later merged with the Swiss group Propack A.G, and was
renamed as Essel Propack Limited.
He went on to set up amusement parks in India. He decided to
foray into broadcasting and was successful in leasing a
transponder on AsiaSat owned by Star TV. India's first private
satellite television channel Zee TV started off on 2nd October
1992. Soon three new channels, Zee News, Zee Cinema and
Music Asia were launched.
Zee TV has also launched regional channels in several regional
languages. Today, the Zee Network reaches out to 32 million
homes across India, besides reaching out to countries like USA,
the Caribbean islands, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Far East,
Australia and New Zealand.
Subhash Chandra is also credited with bringing the concept of
online lottery to India through his company Playwin Infravest
Private Limited.

Chandra is the President of the Global Vipassana Foundation in
his capacity as a Vipassana meditator. Having completed the
Vipassana course in the 1990s, he was impelled to spread the
philosophy of mental purification through self-observation.

EKAL VIDYALAYA
Chandra is the Chairman of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India, a
charitable trust that initiates, supports and runs non-formal one
teacher schools called Ekal Vidyalayas all over the country. The
movement aims to help eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal
India by 2011.
