VERA L. WILLAMS SCHOLARSHIP


PURPOSE
The Vera Lynne Williams Memorial Scholarship was established by Gamma Chapter of Delta
Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honorary Society of women educators.
Ms. Williams passed away in 2013, having been a Special Education teacher in Portsmouth
Public Schools for 27 years. She was a native of Portsmouth, VA, member of St. Paul
Catholic Church, and a graduate of Portsmouth Catholic High School and Norfolk State
University. She was a member of Gamma Rho chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and served in
many other social and civic capacities in the community.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be
1. A college-bound senior in good standing in a Portsmouth City Public high school
2. An outstanding senior who is preferably perusing a career in education.

APPLCATION REQUIREMENTS
1. THE SCHOOL: Each high school is responsible for screening the applications and
submitting the completed applications which include application forms, transcripts,
letters, and essays to Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter Scholarships Chairperson by
March 15th

2. THE APPLICANT:
a. Any Portsmouth high school senior who meets the eligibility requirements may apply
for the award.
b. Each applicant will submit two letters of recommendation. One of these letters
should be from a teacher or school administrator and the other from a community
leader such as a minister, youth group leader, or political leader who knows the
student well.

c. Each applicant will submit a completed application form with a sealed official high
school transcript that includes grades, test scores, and activities.
d. Resume including honors and special recognition that you have received. Include
information regarding your participation in school and out of school activities. Also
include information about any special interest or talents.
e. Each applicant will submit a typed essay (300-500 words) about why they would like
to become an educator.
