KATHARINE B. WOODWARD AWARD


PURPOSE
Gamma Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma International Society is proud to offer a $1,000 award
to a Portsmouth high school senior who has attended Portsmouth Public Schools at least
three (3) years of his/her high school career. This award, known as the Katharine B.
Woodward Award is offered to honor the memory of Miss Woodward, who taught in the
Portsmouth Public Schools for thirty-seven years. Miss Woodward, a founder and past
president of Delta Kappa Gamma, made many contributuions to education during her
lifetime, particularly in the area of foreign language instruction. This scholarship is the
means by which Gamma Chapter has chosen to honor the memory of Miss Woodward
and ecourage students to pursue the advanced study of foreign languages.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be
1. A college-bound senior in good standing in a Portsmouth City Public high school
2. An outstanding senior who has completed three or more years of study in one foreign
language or two years in each of two different foreign languages

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. THE SCHOOL: Each high school is responsible for screening the applications and
submitting the completed applications which include application forms, transcripts,
letters, and essays to Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Chapter Scholarships Chairperson by
March 15.

2. THE APPLICANT:
a. Any Portsmouth high school senior who meets the eligibility requirements may apply
for the award.
b. Each applicant will submit two letters of recommendation. One letter should be from
a teacher who has instructed the student in a foreign language. The second letter of
recommendation is to be from a community leader such as a minister, youth group
leader, or political leader who knows the student well.
c. Include a resume listing honors, awards and extra curricular activities.
d. Each applicant will submit a completed application form with a high school transcript
that includes grades, test scores, and activities.
e. Each applicant will submit a typed essay (300-500 words) written to convince a high
school freshman to study a foreign language in high school.

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 15th .
