booth set up during Riverview
Elementary’s fourth annual
Community Outreach Fair
from 5 to 7 p.m. on March
24. A college savings expert
will be available at the MET
and MESP information booth
to answer questions and
provide materials to parents,
grandparents and others from
the community who are looking
for information on saving for
college. MET contracts allow
individuals to pre-purchase
tomorrow’s tuition at today’s
rates, protecting college savings
against future tuition increases.
The full cost of a MET contract
qualifies for a Michigan income
tax deduction. There also
will be information about the
advantages of establishing a
529 savings plan like MESP,
which provides a way to start
saving to prepare for a child’s
future. When contributing to
MESP, account earnings have
the opportunity to grow federal
and Michigan income tax-free.
Bids to be awarded for
Riverwalk
BIG RAPIDS — Construction
on Riverwalk’s third phase is
nearing. The Big Rapids City
Commission will consider
awarding the Riverwalk
phase three construction bid
to Steve Jones Construction,
who was the low bidder.
The bid is contingent upon
written approval from the
Michigan Department of
Natural Resources and
Environment. The DNRE
is funding 70 percent of the
project, while the city and
additional contributions are
making up the rest of the
cost. Public Works Deputy
Director Roger Schneidt
said the estimate cost of the
project is about $300,000.
The bids, he said, reflected
the competitiveness of
the contractors to get the
project. “Our numbers were
very good. Eleven bids were
received on this project
and all prices were under
the engineer’s estimate,”
he said. Riverwalk will be
extended beginning near Elm
Street on the foot trail along
the river south throughout

River Street Park. The project
will include additional fishing
platforms and overlooks along
the Muskegon River and
historical and informational
signs. About 0.5 mile of walking
trail will be added. “It has been
a very well-received project
since the first (phase) and they
are continued to be looked
at as an important asset (to
the community),” Schneidt
said. Construction is expected
to begin in early June. The
third phase will be completed
by August. Construction was
initially planned to start last
fall, but because of limited time
and manpower, Riverwalk was
put on hold.
Should Food Waste Go
Down the Drain?

against composting certain
types of food, like meat and
dairy. Numerous independent
studies show using a garbage
disposer is an environmentally
responsible option. More than
half of American kitchens
have a disposer. On average,
they cost less than 50 cents a
year in electricity to operate
and account for less than
one percent of a household’s
total water consumption.
Recent advances in disposer
technology, including the

make it possible to discard
virtually any kind of food
waste without concern about
clogs or loud noises. Once
food waste enters wastewater
treatment plants, it can be
recycled into methane and
used as a renewable source
of power for the plant. Also,
many wastewater treatment
plants can process food waste

used as fertilizer. Here are
some surprising facts about
food waste: * The average U.S.
family of four produces about
2,000 pounds of food waste
each year. * According to the
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, food waste is the third
largest category of municipal
solid waste (MSW) in the U.S.,
accounting for about 13 percent
of MSW material. * Americans
throw away more than 25
percent of the food we prepare,
according to a study by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
Those scraps are 70 percent
water, which makes it easy for
disposers to pulverize waste
and send it through sewage

Kill the Weeds, Spare the
Grass

Selective and non-selective
herbicides typically come with
three choices for application:
concentrate, ready-to-spray and
ready-to-use. For large areas,
use a concentrated formula,
mix it with water and apply
with a tank sprayer, or use a
ready-to-spray bottle with a
hose-end attachment. For spot
treatments, a ready-to-use
spray bottle will suffice. * Time
your attack wisely. For optimal
results, apply herbicides on a
sunny day when temperatures
are 60 degrees or higher. If
