Myaudienceisanyonewhohasorisgrievingoversomething,experiencedthefivestagesof
griefandknowsoftheculturalproblemsthatarebreakingupthesociety.
Ineedhelpwithconveyingmyaudiencethroughoutthepaper,thefocusofmyessay,andthe

WhenIfirstgotassignedthispaper,mymindwentwonderingonwhattowriteabout.
MymindinstantlythoughtaboutadanceperformedonSoYouThinkYouCanDancecalled
FixYou.Iwasveryfamiliarwithitsmeaningandsong.However,someonethenshowedme
anotherdanceoffofawebsite.Then,fallinginlovewiththisdance,Idecidedtoanalysisthis
textinstead.IfeltasifIcouldanalyzethistextmorehavingmoretoworkwith.Thenewtext
calledLetItGobyJamesBaywasavideothathadtwodancersinitwhichdescribedthefive
stagesofgriefafterarelationshipbreakup.IknewthatIcouldrelatetothispiecewellandfound
itmoreinterestingtoanalyze.
AfterIchosethisnewtext,itwastimeformygroupconference.Myotherclassmates
gavemeexcellentadviceandtheirthoughtsonmytext.Franforexampletoldmetoreallyfocus
ononeaspectofthedance,soItriedtotakeheradvice.Whilegoingovermytopicsinthe
conference,Iwasalsohelpedwiththeculturalandsocietalmeaningsbehindthistext.Ifound
thisgroupconferencetobeveryhelpful.Aftermeetinginthisconference,Ifeltalotmore
confidentinmypaperandknewthatitwouldnotbehorribletowrite.
Thenaftermygroupconference,itwastimetositdownandwritemypaper.Ithencame
toclasspreparedforthepeerreviewandwashappywithmyresultsforthat.FranandMeghan
gavemeawesomeadviceandconstructivecriticism.Afterreceivingthechangesthatneededto
bemade,Iwentbacktomydormroomtochangethem.Ispiltmysecondparagraphinto
multipleparagraphsandalsomadeideasmoreclear.IamveryproudofthechangesthatImade
afterpeerrevision.
Indevelopingmylineofinquiry,Ithoughtofallthetopicsandthebasicfactsthatwas
goingtobediscussedinmypaper.AnotherwaythatIthoughtaboutthelineofinquirywasthat
itwasathesisstatementinaquestionformat.AfterIhadthoughtaboutitthisway,alongwith
usingthetemplateyougaveusinclass,formingthelineofinquirybecameaneasytaskforme.

Inconclusion,IthinkthatmyGAPhasmanystrengthsandweaknesses.Mystrengths
wouldbetheanalyzingpartofthetext.IthinkIdidagoodjobonfiguringoutthesymbolsand
breakingthedancedownintothefivestagesofgrief.However,Idothinkthatmypaperdoes
havesomeweaknesses.Ithinkthattheorganizationofmypapercouldbebetterandthatsome
areasmightneedtobedevelopedmore.Also,Ineedalotofhelpwiththeaudienceinthispaper.
IfeelasifIstrugglealotmoreinthispaperthanthePLPwiththeaudience.Idonotknowhow
toportraytheaudiencethroughoutthispaper.Iwouldappreciatefeedbackonthat.
Overall,IhavefoundthatatthisstageinworkingontheGAPthatmyideasmightneed
toberearrangedandexplainedinmoredetail.Ihavediscoveredthatanalyzingtakesalotmore
timethansimplywritingapaper.Analyzingrequiresapersontolookatatextmorethanonce.
Althoughittakesupmoretime,thepaperwillbegreatandonethatfullyreachesitpotential
withanalyzingatext.

1.Inlife,therearemanyhappy,sad,joyful,humble,memorableexperiencesthatwego
through.Someofthesemomentswillcausepeopletobehappy,whilesomeoftheother
momentscouldcausegrief.Whensomeoneexperiencesgrief,he/shewillgothroughfivestages:
denial,anger,bargaining,depression,andacceptance.Throughthesefivestages,aperson
encountersmanydifferentemotionsandstatesofmind.Someexamplesofwhensomeonewould
gothroughthefivestagesofgriefarewhenhe/shebreaksupwiththeirsignificantotherorwhen
afamilymemberorfriendpassesaway.Bothofthesesituationscancausealotofemotional
damagetoahuman.HowdoesTalviaFaviamanipulatethetwodancerstorepresentorshowthe
themeanddynamicsinthemediumtocommunicatethefivestagesofgriefafterarelationship
breakup?
2.Inthetext,thereisonemaingenre,romance.However,theartofromanceisbroken
downintodifferentelementsthenbreakingdownfurtherintomorespecificcomponents.The

affectsthefemalesmotionsandspecificallyherlegs.Physicalcontactisseen,andthedancers
stillhavesimilarmirroringmovements.Havingsimilarmovements,theyportraystillhavinga
littleconnection.Atthispointinthedance,themusicisslower,andatfiftyeightseconds,the
strengthoftheman'sneckisneededtopushthefemale'sbodyupward.Thisshowsthatone
partner,ifnottwo,arerelyingstillononeanotherbeinginthestageofdenial.Secondsafter,the
musicpicksupaswellastheirdancesmoves.Theystarttodanceseparate,nowontotheanger
stageofthefivestagesofgrief.
4.Withthisstageofanger,themovementsbecomemoreforceful,swingingoftheirarms
andlegs,andthemaleappearstobeangry.Hethenholdsbackthefemale'sarms,andthenshe
startshittingherpartner'sbackwithherfists,tryingtobargainwithhim.Shestillwantshislove
andaffection,andheisturninghisbackonherandwalksaway.Theybothbegintofightoff
theirfeelingsforoneanother,allowingdepressiontosetin.

5.Shortlyafter,thegirldoesagesturewithherhandtowardsthemanthatresemblesher
takingawayhissoul,whichcouldresemblehowdepressiontakesawayyouremotionalstability
forthemoment.Eventhelyricsatthemomentthegirldoesthatgesturesay"tryingtopushthis
problemupthehill/whenit'sjusttooheavytohold".Themalesbodybecomesverystiff,
realizingheisdepressedwithouthislovedone.Themusicthenspeedsup,thecoupleaccepts
whathashappened;theirmovementsareindependentofoneanotherday.Thegirlthenlies
acrosstheman'sfeet,risesupfromhisforce,symbolizinghowsheisliberatedandacceptswhat
ishappening.Towardstheendofthevideo,thesongpicksupforthelasttimeandthecoupleis
pullingawayfromeachother,stillgrievingbutcanmoveonwiththeirlife.Alloftheabove
displayshowmovementscanbeanalyzedtoportrayastoryandtheme.
6.Besidesthemovementandsongtempointhispiece,theattirecanplayahugerolein
conveyingamessage.Inthistext,theartistsarewearingblack,whichtypicallyhasanegative
connotation.Blackhasknowntoresembledeathandmourning,alsofearandtheunknown.In
thisdance,sincethedancersareinallblack,onecouldconcludethatthemessagetheyaretrying
toconveyhasanegative,sadconnotation.
7.Inthistext,therearemanysocialandculturalconnections.Theconnectionscould
simplybetheconnectionbetweenrelationshipsbetweenagirlandguyinhighschool.Itcan
connecttoanyonethathasbeenoriscurrentlyinarelationship.Thisaudiencetothistextcould
rangefromasmallaudiencetoalargecrowdoreventheworld.Everywherethereare
relationshipsstartingandendingandsomegrievemorethanothers.Intheserelationships,
societyputsademandonthefocus.Somuchinsocietylinksbacktoarelationshipstatus.Also
thismessagecouldrelatetoabiggeraudienceormeanabiggermessage.Notonlycanthisvideo

relatetoacouplebreakingup,butcanresemblehowsocietypresentdayisbreakingup.The
amountofwarsgoingonisrepresentedindirectlyinthisvideoandalsothelackofpeace
betweencountries.Thetwodancers,strugglingforpoweroveroneanother,canrepresentthe
struggleandforceofthetwocounties.Thisvideocanhaveahugeimpacttoacouple,butcan
alsodemonstratevisuallythebreakingupofthecommunitiesandworldaroundus.
8.Throughoutthispiece,differentpeoplecananalyzeitandseedifferentmeaningsand
representations.Thetwodancerscouldrepresentsomethingsosimpleastoacouplebreakingup
andgoingthroughthefivestagesofgriefbutcouldalsorepresentacommunityonalargerscale
breakingup.Thesethemesareportrayedthroughthedifferentelementsofdance,motion,and
visualarts.Theaudiotothisvideoalsoplaysamajorroleindescribingthestoryormessage.
Thetempo,whenitslowsdownorpicksup,canhelpanaudiencefeeltheemotionsofthe
dancers.Itallowstheheartbeatofthelistenertospeeduporslowdown,dependingonthepartof
thesong.Also,thecostumesplayamajorroleinportrayingthemood.Onecouldanalyzethe
moodbyunderstandtheircoloroftheircostumesandwhatthecolorrepresents.Allofthese
