Lesson Reflection 5

For my 5th observed lesson, I did a direct instruction combined with a cooperative
learning lesson on sequencing. I reviewed sequence words with the students and we discussed
their importance in telling and retelling a story. I created a poster for the students that included
example sequence words for them to reference.
After we reviewed sequence words, I modeled how to read a piece of text and pull out the
sequence words to help them explain the order in which events happen. I showed them how to
fill out a flow chart to help them place the events in order. Afterwards, we did one together. I
wrote the steps on the board: read, highlight, order, illustrate, and retell. This helped the students
process the information and understand how to sequence events. They really enjoyed using the
sequence map, and it helped them with retelling the story.
For independent practice, I gave the students another piece of text and they had to
complete the same steps in the order in which we did them together. I was impressed with how
well they were able to process and understand the information. They were very detailed in their
retellings of the story when I had them do partner shares. I was satisfied with how this lesson
turned out, and I feel as if the students understood the material.
