We thank God for being able to complete this academic project successfully. We wish
to thank to our institute, Polytechnic Ungku Omar for giving us the opportunity to carry out
the academic project in this semester entitled The Ergonomical Aspect Of Geotechnical
Laboratory To Reduce The Operating Defects. From this project, we have acquired much
knowledge and experience useful to us in the future.
By the same time, we would like to thank our supervisor, Pn. Julaiha binti Abdul
Rajim for the kind, caring and valuable guidance throughout the period of this academic
project. Pn. Julaiha has provided us with plenty of advice, information and also
encouragement to us. With the proper guidance from her, we successfully could implement
this academic project.
Never forget our valuable respondents/students who are including semester 3 and 4
Civil Engineering students and Lab supervisors. This is because, we may not obtain the
information needed without their cooperation and guidance. Thank you to our beloved parents
who always pray for our success and provide moral support to us. In addition, we want to
suppress our thanks to all other parties who helped us directly or indirectly. Hopefully, this
project provides an useful reference and guidance for future students.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Ergonomics in Malaysia has been introduced over a decade ago with the
establishment of the ergonomics division in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and
Health (NIOSH) on 1st December 1992. Laboratory ergonomics in Malaysia is not given such
concern. In Polytechnic Ungku Omar, Geotechnical Laboratory under Civil Engineering
Department is consists of few problems on ergonomic aspect. We found that students face
difficulties when carrying out lab work or classes in Geotechnical laboratory under Civil
Engineering Department. Besides that, certain tools and furniture are not safe to use. The
objective of our study is to identify the problems faced by students when using Geotechnical
Lab under Civil Engineering Department. And also find the suggested solution for the
problems found. The study was conducted by distributing questionnaires and also interview.
Questionnaire distributed to identify the problem while the solutions are obtained through
interview. From the research we found that the lab has few types of problems on ergonomic
aspect. And we found suggested solution for that from Department of Occupational Safety
and Health (DOSH), Ipoh, Perak. By the research we could know that most students dont
know what ergonomics is. Few criteria in Geotechnical Lab are unsafe. If this situation
continues it may affect the safety of students and their performance. So, these aspects should
be changed as soon as possible.

Abstrak: Ergonomik di Malaysia telah diperkenalkan lebih sedekad lalu dengan penubuhan
bahagian ergonomik di Institut Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Negara (NIOSH) pada
1hb Disember 1992. Ergonomik makmal di Malaysia tidak diberi perhatian itu. Di Politeknik
Ungku Omar, Makmal Geoteknik bawah Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam adalah terdiri daripada
beberapa masalah pada aspek ergonomik. Kami mendapati bahawa pelajar menghadapi
kesukaran apabila menjalankan kerja-kerja makmal atau kelas dalam makmal Geoteknik di
bawah Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam. Selain itu, alat tertentu dan perabot tidak selamat untuk
digunakan. Objektif kajian kami adalah untuk mengenalpasti masalah-masalah yang dihadapi
oleh pelajar apabila menggunakan Makmal Geoteknik bawah Jabatan Kejuruteraan Awam.
Dan juga mencari penyelesaian yang dicadangkan untuk masalah dijumpai. Kajian ini
dijalankan dengan mengedarkan soal selidik dan juga temubual. Soal selidik yang diedarkan
untuk mengenal pasti masalah manakala penyelesaian yang diperolehi melalui temuduga. Dari
penyelidikan kami mendapati bahawa makmal mempunyai beberapa jenis masalah pada aspek
ergonomik. Dan kita dapati penyelesaian yang dicadangkan untuk itu daripada Jabatan
Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (DOSH), Ipoh, Perak. Oleh penyelidikan kita boleh
tahu bahawa kebanyakan pelajar tidak tahu apa yang ergonomik adalah. Beberapa kriteria
dalam Makmal Geoteknik adalah tidak selamat. Jika keadaan ini berterusan, ia boleh
menjejaskan keselamatan pelajar dan prestasi mereka. Jadi, aspek-aspek ini perlu ditukar
secepat mungkin.
