Thanks to all the new amenities in place on the

Two weeks ago our Group signed a contract with
two important Canadian Companies, to take care of
sewage and potable water treatment. As you
already know, these are two majors concerns if we
want to maintain the environmental balance on the
island. As a key part of the program we have
centralized the entire infrastructure in the centre of
the island, to avoid any contamination.
HATCH ENERGY, the company in charge of the
electricity system, will be working hard to define
the best technology for the island, using a
maximum of green energy. They have already
explored BIOMASS and BIO DIESEL solution
combined with or without solar panels.
SEPROTECH will develop very efficient sewage
treatment plants and are also in charge of the
potable treatment system.
It is a big challenge for the companies but they have
all the required experience and an international
reputation, so we are in good hands

Hace dos semanas atrás nuestro Grupo firmó un
contrato con dos importantes compañías
canadienses, para que construyeran el servicio de
alcantarillados y la planta para el tratamiento de
agua potable. Como ustedes ya saben, estos dos
aspectos del proyecto son sumamente
importantes, si queremos mantener el balance
ecológico en la isla. Esta es una parte clave del
programa. Nosotros hemos centralizado toda la
infraestructura en el centro de la isla, para evitar
cualquier tipo de contaminación.
HATCH ENERGY, la empresa a cargo del sistema de
electricidad, estará trabajando muy duro para
definir la mejor tecnología para la isla, usando al

Where there are strong river streams, we have
build decant tubs, which work as a natural filter, of
run off mud in the rainy season, and keeping the
water clean. You can see these tubs at the airport,
in the workers camp, in the north of the island
and in four different locations.

We are currently using Geo-textiles, which are

using them in the north area of the hotel, where
construction work is being done and it helps us
prevent erosion.
We are also using slopes to avoid erosion stabilize
the land, and have put barriers in place to stop
water running from the slopes.
For the construction of roads we have build
alternate routes, so the trucks transporting
construction material don’t pass through the main
streets which are being paved avoiding damage to
infrastructures in place below ground.
Is the construction operation on the island self
sufficient?
It is partly self sufficient. When landscaping is
being done, we use what is known as ground
loans. This mean that when we extract material
from an island area for construction, we transport
it to another part of the island, where filling its
needed. There are enough rocks on the island to
satisfy a large part of our infill needs, but we also
bring rocks and sand from Panama under carefully
monitored conditions to assure the island’s
integrity.We never extract rocks or sand from the
island for construction, just for filling.
How many workers are involved and what
equipment?
At the moment, there are more than 200 workers,
which include bricklayers, carpenters, heavy
machine drivers, plumbers, electricians,
mechanics, cooks, security guards, boat captains,
engineers, helpers, architects, topographers and
paramedics. As for the heavy machinery we have
available, there are eight 20-yard dump trucks,
three D8 caterpillar tractors, four excavation
shovels, three personal transportation pick ups,
five boats, four concrete trucks, and other smaller
pieces of equipment.
The staff at Vivero´s Island have a 7:00 a.m. -
3:30 p.m. work schedule, from Monday to
Saturday. They have Sunday off. Every two weeks,
Viveros Group transports the workers to Panama
City at no costs they may enjoy a family weekend.

Cuales son los retos que se enfrentan para
mantener la integridad del medio ambiente en
la isla y la erosión?
Estamos utilizando productos a base de resinas
vegetales y no tóxicos, para mejorar la resistencia
de los suelos y minimizar la erosión en distintos
puntos de la isla y donde se necesiten, dependiendo
de las correntias pluviales.
Donde existan correntias pluviales fuertes, hemos
construido tinas de de decantación, las cuales
trabajan como un filtro natural sedimentando el
lodo y la arcilla que se desprende de la capa
superficial de la tierra en época lluviosa,
manteniendo así el agua limpia que llega al mar.
Estas tinas se pueden apreciar en el aeropuerto, en
el campamento de los trabajadores, en el área norte
de la isla y en 4 puntos más de la isla.
Estamos utilizando Geo-textiles, los cuales son
completamente naturales y biodegradables para
proteger las áreas en construcción. En estos
momentos ya los tenemos en utilización en el área
del hotel norte, que ya se estan haciendo trabajos
de construcción y nos ayudan a mantener la tierra
en su lugar, previniendo la erosión.
Se esta utilizando taludes (cortes de tierra
escalonados) para evitar la mayor cantidad de
erosión posible estabilizando de esta forma la tierra,
utilizando también barreras alternadas para detener
la fuerza con que el agua se escurre entre los
taludes.
Un dato importante en la construcción de las calles,
es que hemos construido vías de acceso alternas,
para que los camiones que trasportan material de
construcción y movimiento de tierra, no transiten
por las calles principales que ya estan siendo
trabajadas para la pavimentación y ya tienen
instalados todos los servicios subterráneos,
manteniendo de esta forma los trabajos ya
realizados sin dañarlos.
Como la operación de construcción en la isla es
autosuficiente?
La operación en la isla es parte autosuficiente; en
Isla Viveros cuando se realizan los movimientos de
tierra, hacemos lo que se conoce como prestamos
de tierra, esto significa que cuando extraemos
material de un área de la isla por motivos de
construcción (aeropuerto, lagos, golf), se transporta
a otra parte de la isla que se necesita para relleno o
material base. En la isla hay suficiente roca para
poder satisfacer nuestras necesidades de relleno y
capas de calles, pero también traemos piedra y
arena desde Panama en bachas especiales para
asegurar la integridad de la isla. En la isla no
extraemos arena ni piedra para construcción solo
para rellenos, todo lo demás se trae desde Panama.
Cuantos trabajadores y equipo hay en la isla?
En estos momentos hay mas de 200 trabajadores en
la isla los mismos comprenden una gran gama de
mano calificada como lo son: Albañiles, carpinteros,
conductores de equipo pesado, plomeros,

Una Joya Histórica Con Vínculos En La Isla De Las Perlas
In a previous newsletter we talked about the
shopping and dining and wining opportunities
in the thriving modern center, but to visit to
Panama without a trip to Casco Viejo, with its
visible link to the Perlas Islands, is to miss an
historic jewel that moves the clock back, while
providing glimpses into the future.
The old city,
listed as a
world
heritage site,
sits across
the Bay of
Panama,
opposite the
superstructures that provides a new defining
view of a 2lst century boom city. Its old
buildings, monuments and churches, ans
restaurants clustered around treed squares,
and narrow cobbled streets overhung by
flowered balconies provides the perfect
setting for a quiet stroll, and the chance to
marvel at the architecture of a bygone age,
while witnessing the tasteful rehabilitation of
old buildings.
The old city was a second attempt for the
Spanish colonialists of the sixteenth century.
The first, the ruins of which still stand across
the bay, was destroyed by fire, in 1671 after
being overrun by the locally villified Captain
Sir Henry Morgan.
At the old

monument. there is a fine view of the Amador
Causeway, home to a modern yacht marina,

electricistas, mecánicos, cocineros, guardias de
seguridad, capitanes de lanchas, ingenieros,
ayudantes, arquitectos, topografos y paramédicos.
Dentro de la flota de quipo pesado que tenemos
disponibles en la isla hay: 8 camiones volquetes de
20 yardas cada uno, 3 buldózer Caterpillar D8, 4
palas de excavación, 3 pickups para transporte de
personal, 5 lanchas, 4 camiones de concreto, una
bacha recién adquirida de 130 toneladas de
capacidad, entre otros.
El personal en Isla Viveros tiene un horario de
trabajo de 7:00 AM a 3:30 PM, de lunes a sábado,
domingos libres. Cada dos semanas, Grupo Viveros
transporta a los trabajadores a la Ciudad de Panama
para que tengan un fin de semana en familia
(sábado y domingo), sin costo para ellos.
En nuestros boletínes anteriores hemos hablado sobre
oportunidades que existen para ir de compras y donde
cenar en este bullicioso centro moderno, pero visitar
Panamá sin hacer sin hacer una gira por el Casco Viejo,
que tiene un vículo tangible con el archipielao de Las
Perlas, es perderse una joya histórica que los llevará al

There are excellent museums in Casco Viejo,
including the Canal Museum, in the Plaza de
la Independencia, where Panama declared its
independence from Colombia in 1903. The
museum traces Panama’s from pre-Hispanic
to modern times. Next door is the Museum of
National History and across the plaza the
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción,
whose towers are inlaid with mother of pearl
from the Las Perlas.
At the San
Jose
Cathedral a
few blocks
away is the
beautiful
Gold Altar,
intricately
carved of
wood and
gilded with
gold.
The Palacio Municipal, a neoclassical building
from 1910 now home to government offices
and houses a small museum containing
artifacts of Panama's history since
independence. The old city is replete with fine
restaurants, like Mostaza, Café Rene, Casa
Blanca, Platea and cozy watering holes
including Sibaritas, a relaxing gathering place
for local residents from across the world.
Another must in Panama is, of course, the
Canal, now undergoing a multi billion dollar
expansion. A short drive from the Miraflores
Locks, where you can dine in style and watch
the constant stream of giant freighters
passing through. Drive on for another 30
minutes and you will arrive in Gamboa, home
to the splendid Gamboa Hotel, and while you
sit having lunch at the edge of the Chagres
River, you can watch giant turtles snatching
food from under the snouts of cruising
alligators, and see birds and animals resting
on the river banks.
Back in the
city, if you
are a sailor,
be sure to
spend time
on the
Amador
Causeway,
home to
restaurants
and clubs,
and compare sailing craft at one of the finest
marinas in the region.
Panama is more than a tropical paradise, it is
living history. It's your to enjoy and only
minutes flying time, or a few hours by boat
from Isla Viveros.
