Postulates
A postulate is A statement, also known as an axiom,

which is taken to be true without proof. Postulates are

the basic structure from which lemmas and theorems are
derived (Weisstein, n.d).
There are Five different postulates that prove two
triangles in a problem are congruent to each other. These
five postulates are as follows; SSS (side/side/side), SAS
(side/angle/side), ASA (angle/side/angle), AAS
(angle/angle/side), and HL (Hypotenuse/Leg).

Postulates
SAS
SAS = Side/Angle/Side.
Can prove if two triangles are

congruent to each other if two of

the sides and one angle on each of
the triangles are the exact same.
The angle does have to be in the
middle of the two sides that are
congruent on both triangles.
The two triangles in this example
are congruent to each other by
SAS postulate.

ASA Postulate =

Postulates
ASA

Angle/Side/Angle.
If an angle, one side, and another
angle are congruent to an angle,
one side, and another angle on the
second triangle in a problem, the
two triangles are congruent to one
another.
In this example, the two triangles
can proven to be congruent to
each other by ASA postulate.

Postulates
AAS
AAS Postulate = Angle/Angle/

Side.
If two angles and one side are
congruent to two angles and one
side on another triangle in a
problem, the two triangles are
congruent to each other.
In this example, the two triangles
can be proven to be congruent to
each other by AAS postulate.

Postulates
HL

HL Postulate = Hypotenuse/ Leg.

If the hypotenuse and the leg of a

right triangle are the same to the

hypotenuse and the leg of the
another right triangle in a problem
then both triangles are congruent
to each other.
In this example the two triangles
can be proven to be congruent to
each other by HL postulate.
