LESSON EIGHTY-TWO
D. DIALOGUE
An overview of simultaneous engineering
Figures 1 shows an outline of the simultaneous engineering approach as compared the
conventional sequential approach. In simultaneous engineering, as the figure shows, all
the relevant departments (in-house departments such as design, production engineering
and quality assurance together with suppliers of bought-out parts) work together from
the very first stage of the design process, pooling their knowledge and expertise to factor
the required quality and cost into the product at the outset. Because of this, more time is
spent than used to be in the initial phases of the development (the phases from the start of
the development project through to just before the production of the working drawings in
an attempt to reduce the time spent on the subsequent detailed design and pre-production
stages. The aim of this is to bring, high-quality low-cost new products to market on
shorter timescales.
