Syllabus for Eco Psychology 2400

Text: Eco Psychology by Roszak.

Attendance in class is mandatory, each week students need


to be prepared by reading assigned article and thus be able
to intelligently discuss the topic in class. there will be a 5
point open book quiz at the beginning of each class, this will
serve as credit for attending class and for showing
preparedness for class discussion.
Week One: January 13TH. first class meeting 5:30 pm. to 7:45 p.m. (South
City Campus, n108. buy book and select individual reading from reading
list. Begin Online portion of class. Read Article from Utne Reader: The
Sopranos and Ecopsychology. Take quiz. Submit online.
Week two: January 20th: no class, M.L.K. DAY
Week three: January 27th: Reading Eco-psychology and the
Environmental Revolution (pg.xiii) Read where Psyche Meets Gaia. Take
my Ecological footprint on line. Begin journal, how can you improve your
own behavior to lower your use of the worlds natural resources? Begin
tracking use of resources, recycling, water use, energy consumption.
Week Four: February 3rd. Read: Are we Happy yet? (pg.68). and The all
Consuming Self. (Pg.77) Answer Questions on Canvas and submit, quiz
due 2/10/2014

Week five February 10th :Sense and perception: The skill of Ecological
perception. (pg.201) Read and take quiz online. quiz due February 18th,
Discuss earth day project
Week six: February 17th: no class presidents day
Week seven: February 24th: Justice, Dr.David Strayer, University of Utah
Week Eight: March 3rd:Personality. Jungian Psychology and world
consciousness. (pg. 92) Take quiz on line visit www.jungian
personality.com take personality test Meyers Briggs Type Indicator. What is
your totem? (a totem is a wild animal to which your spirit feels a bond with).
why do you feel a bond with this animal ?
Week Nine: March 10th: Spring Break
Week ten:March 17th: The Psychology of Sustainability. Article online web
site, take quiz.
Week eleven: March 24th: Justice Morath: Back country ethics/ Leave no
trace training certification read web link to BLM Monticello about how to
respectfully treat archeological ruins. Crypto bionic soil
Week twelve: March 31st: hike, the research on global warming. discuss
earth day project
Week Thirteen: April 7th: Hike
Week fourteen: April 14th; Hike
Week fifteen: April 21st Get ready for earth day project. April 22nd earth
day project.
Week Sixteen: April 28th: final meeting before field school. FIELD
SCHOOL CEDAR MESA. MAY 9th TO MAY 13th.
May 9th: travel to cedar mesa
May 10th: Service project with Rangers
May 11th: Hike to Turkey pen ruins

May 12th: Hike to processional panel/ tour of bluff


May 13th: Hike to Sheiks canyon
May 8th: return to Salt Lake City

Readings: Read Ecotopia: be prepared to discuss in class and do 2 page


book review (due DUE 1 WEEK AFTER FIELD SCHOOL ). select a quote
or concept from book to discuss on field school.
Begin Journal first week of semester.list your carbon foot print the U.S.
carbon footprint and what number nation the U. S. is on the Happy Planet
Index. In journal track you daily use of energy and water for your house
hold, how many bags of garbage does your house hold produce? Write
about experiences and observations in nature. Describe any service
projects you have done. take quiz on line (my foot print) determine how to
decrease your carbon footprint. Retake footprint at end of
semester.Ecopsychology Journal
Read Pre-Trip packet, Print out copy of course packet, visit leave no trace
website, read up on backcountry ethics.
