Rough Draft
To keep up with the students that are skipping class, on April 2nd the students will be
receiving a tracking identification badge.
The district is excited about these new IDs, superintendent Patti Mann said. We hope to
expand the program to the middle and elementary schools next year. A few parents are upset.
Yes, I know. But until a judge says we can't have the IDs we are moving forward.
Assistant Principal Shay Strobinski feels like this is the easiest and safest way to keep
track of the students. I spend a good portion of each day looking for and chasing down truant
students." Strobinski said. "With the ID tracking system we can be more efficient in locating
students.
Although Stobinski and Mann believe the tracking identification badges are helpful to the
truant students some parents disagree with this decision. This is a blatant violation of my son's
privacy rights." parent Oscar Redman said. "He doesn't want someone monitoring him at all
times. No child in the United States should be tagged or tracked. We want it stopped.
The tracking devices have a range of 200 yards from the principal's office so that police
and faculty will be able to track where a student is if he or she is skipping. Redman said
parents should embrace this new safety measure not fight it.
The school believes these will help with the students attendance. If they know they are
getting tracked they will make an effort to show up to class. I don't understand all the
complaints." Senior Nina Truman said. "Students are at school to learn. If they are not at school
they can't learn.
