Bethany Hamilton has long been a role model for the student. After losing her arm to a shark attack, Hamilton persevered and got back in the water. For a school assignment on the biography Soul Surfer, the student had to answer questions about the book, compare it to an online article using quotes from both as evidence, and introduce a topic in an organized way to make important connections. The student felt they strongest at introducing a topic and organizing complex ideas as required by the school standard.

Bethany Hamilton has always been one of my role models. She is such a strong and amazing person, how after even losing her arm to a shark she got back in the water. We had to answer a few questions about our biography in the paper which needed quotes for evidence and we had to compare the book to an article we found on the internet. We also needed five quotes from the article for evidence to support our argument and help compare the two. I think my strongest part of writing this paper was introducing a topic; organizing complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and multimedia when useful to adding comprehension.
