Plot: This book explains the human body parts and their functions through explanations,
examples, and photos.
Setting: This is not a story book, therefore it does not have a setting.
Theme: Understanding your body, while being accepting of differences in other peoples bodies.
Characterization: There are not described characters, but the book uses detailed explanations
and specific vocabulary to describe each part of the body.
Style: Text book styled, but the actual text is aimed toward younger readers.
Point of View: Informational
Describe Characteristics of this text specific to the genre: Useful photographs and figures go
along with the text. There are also detailed illustrations to show what the text means.
Reflection: This is a great book to introduce a science lesson on the body. I believe it is for a
higher level reader because of how dense it is, but it could be incorporated into a younger
classroom if the teacher reads it aloud and breaks it into different lessons.

Point of View: Instructional

information in a simpler manner.
Reflection: The reading level is not too high, so it could be used to review or introduce fractions
for a math lesson. It is a cute little book, and I would want to integrate it into my lessons.

Plot: Many brave people race to help others after the Twin Towers were attacked.
Setting: New Yorks Manhattan Island, inside and around the World Trade Center is the setting.

Theme: Helping others in need, and bravery are the themes of this story.
Characterization: Chief Pfiefer, Captain Whitaker, and the other rescuers are portrayed with
bravery by the actions they make in the story.
Style: Highly detailed and descriptive sentences capture the scenes of the attack in a serious
tone.
Point of View: 3rd person narrative
Describe Characteristics of this text specific to the genre: Large amounts of description, and
detailed illustrations give you a mental picture of the information.
Reflection: This book is definitely for an older student because of the subject. It goes into great
detail, and it is a bit heavy for younger children.

Plot: A boy grows up making and appreciating art as the country changes, and the Berlin Wall is
eventually torn down.

Characterization: The boy is portrayed through the pictures that show his actions.
Style: The book has the basic story and then multiple pictures on each page. The pictures portray
an event and have a description for it.

Point of View: It is in narrative, but has journals included that are in first person.
Describe Characteristics of this text specific to the genre: Highly detailed illustrations and
specific dates for events.
Reflection: It is a very interesting book to use for introducing the history of other cultures and
how the Cold War effected them. I would suggest it for older students since it contains a lot of
dates and information.

contribute to the information in the text.
Reflection: This would be a great resource for students to use on a science project. It is filled
with details and vocabulary that that could use for research.

topic. It is detailed and formal.
Reflection: This is another good resource for research. It is detailed and educational. I would use
this in my classroom for science.

Puerto Rico by Patricia Kummer

Plot: The historical events that developed Puerto Rico are explained. They also cover the
geography and social aspects of the island

Theme: The theme is educating other on the facts of Puerto Rico.
Characterization: There are no characters in this book, but it describes each location and its
background with measurements and descriptive detail.
Style: Informational text
Point of View: Informational Narrative
Describe Characteristics of this text specific to the genre: It contains measurements and
detailed records. It has maps and timelines to better comprehend the information.
Reflection: It is a very interesting and in depth book for intermediate readers. It is full of
beautiful photos that capture the life of Puerto Rico.
