Jazz Piano Great Plays Solo At Davies
Keith Jarrett is one of the finest musicians of this, or any other, century. Classically trained, Jarrett had star-
making tenures in the ‘60s with Charles Lloyd's fabled quartet before applying his unique keyboard skills to the
electric piano and organ with the incendiary pioneering fusion line-up of the Miles Davis group (recording such
seminal albums as 'Live/Evil' and 'At Fillmore') before dedicating himself to an acoustic solo and small group
career.
While Jarrett had already made numerous acoustic albums as a leader fronting a remarkable trio with Ornette
Coleman bassist Charlie Haden and noted drummer Paul Motian (who would also make up half of Jarrett's
American Quartet with saxophonist Dewey Redman), it has been the pianist's four-decade association with
esteemed German label ECM that established his genius as a solo performer and gave him a creative outlet for his
myriad group projects.
Jarrett’s epic, completely improvised solo concerts regularly stun his live audiences and earned him a unique
position in jazz history. The pianist has performed regularly in the Bay Area with his stellar trio featuring bassist
Gary Peacock and longtime drummer Jack DeJohnette, but this solo concert marks his first in SF since 2006 and
only his second local solo recital in the last 14 years. Not surprisingly, the concert is being anticipated as not only
a highlight of the SFJAZZ Spring Season but one of the major music event in the Bay Area this year.
