Religion:

The predominant religion in Afghanistan is Islam (99%).

Sunni Muslims were the majority (84%) over the Shiite Muslims (15%).
The other 1% of religions in Afghanistan includes small groups of Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis,
and Jews.
Sharia law is the body of Islamic law, and translates to way or path. Basically, sharia
law is the legislation in which people are to follow within their daily lives, both privately
and publicly, in a legal system built off of Islam.
The Sharia law/Islamic law is not unitary, and have four major schools/Islamic legal
systems in systematized Sharia from most conservative to least:
o Hanbali (most conservative)
o Maliki
o Hanafi
o Shafii (least conservative)
The four schools disagree on how certain situations are to be judged, which has a direct
correlation to how strictly they interpret/follow the Sharia law.
One major conflict resulting from religious tension is the schism between the Sunni and
Shiite Muslims.

This schism supports the sectarian violence between the Sunnis and Shiites, as sectarian
attacks as well as bombings have occurred during the last few years in Afghanistan.
