INDONESIA IN CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX

AND WORLD HAPPINESS REPORT PERSPECTIVE

The data and analysis in the World Happiness Report 2014 have helped to satisfy, and
perhaps to fuel, growing public interest in applying the science of happiness to public affairs.
Readership thus far is about 1.5 million, 50% more than for the first World Happiness Report.
The happiness itself was divided into six factors such as GDP per capita, healthy years
of life expectancy, social support (as measured by having someone to count on in times of
trouble), trust (as measured by a perceived absence of corruption in government and
business), perceived freedom to make life decisions, and generosity (as measured by recent
donations, adjusted for differences in income).
From the World Happiness Report 2015, we could see that Indonesia is in the 74th rank
out of 158 countries measured. Social support is the biggest factor that enhancing Indonesian
happiness. It means that most of Indonesian tends to be happier when they could rely on
society (when it comes to trouble) since Indonesian is much more collectivistic in its daily
life.
One of the funniest thing from the figure is the fact that Indonesia has no point
measured for trust factor (as measured by a perceived absence of corruption in government
and business). It means that most of Indonesian are really unhappy since they have trust issue
to government & business in terms of corruption aspect. We may see lately that many
publication in TV or media as well stated a lot of corruption news in every single aspect
especially government birocracy despite the fact that Indonesia already has its own ICW
(Indonesia Corruption Watch) and KPK (Commision of Corruption Eradication). It is also
synchronized with the fact from worldwide CPI (Corruption Perception Index).
From the Corruption Perception Index 2014, we could see that Indonesia is in the 107th
rank out of 175 countries measured. Indonesia has the same rank with Argentina and Djibouti
with the total score of 34. It means that Indonesia is considered as one of the medium-high
corrupted country in the world compared to Switzerland and Denmark whose constantly
being top 5 at both World Happiness Report and Corruption Perception Index. Therefore,
from this perspective we could conclude that the trust factor (as measured by CPI) is really
siginificant and synchronizable to measure the happiness of a country. The more a country
has CPI score (cleaner), the more that country has happier score and vice versa.
