Proper Opening of 8th Grade Math Class

Explain:
State the procedure
Today we will learn how to properly be prepared for the beginning of class each
day.
General Rationale
--This is important because I want each of my students to get the credit they
deserve for being present for their day in the classroom.
--Attendance can be used as a checkpoint to make sure safety precautions are in
place for the student, teacher, and staff.
--Another reason why this is important is because it ensures students are prepared
to start the classroom activities.
Explain and Model the Procedure
1. Greet students at the door with handshake or fist bump.
2. Check attendance by seating chart or calling roll.
3. Direct students attention to front of classroom at board for what is expected
today and that evening for homework.
4. Begin ice-breaker to engage students in class.
5. Call attention to activity or lesson plan for the day and begin coursework.
Check for Understanding
--Where will I greet each one of you?
--What two ways will I check attendance?
--Where will you look for expectations of the day and for later homework?
--What will we do next after you get homework assignments and expectations for
todays activities?
--What is to happen after our ice-breaker?
Rehearse:
Practice the Procedure
--I will split the class in three groups (A,B,C). After checking for understanding I will
have each group responsible for each of the first three rules. I will then act out an
example of icebreaker and each group will respond to rule five getting ready for
lesson plan or activity. We will run through the rehearsal three times that way each
group gets to rehearse each rule. This could be the example of the rehearsal.
(A1, B2, C3 : A2, B3, C1 : A3, B1, C2).
Give Feedback
--Let students know when they need to redirect attention to board. Continuous
practice/coaching until skill is mastered. Mastery will be known when students know
what is expected and dont have to ask questions about lesson plan for the day or
homework assignments.
Reinforce:
Reteach, Practice, and Give Praise
--Luke you did a great job getting ready for the day and tonights homework.

--Mike you didnt sit in your seat in a timely manner. Please get focused and ready
for the day.
