Early Life
Born in 1765 Chalon-sur-Sane,
France, he began his career
teaching and serving in the
military, only to return home in
1801. He became interested in
science when he began working
with his brother on his inventions
and experiments.

Experimentation
By 1816 Joseph began
experimenting with light
to reproduce images
Art of lithography grows
popular in France
Interest led to earliest
known photograph in

In 1839 Daguerres photographic
invention, the daguerreotype,
became a success, Nipce's
heliograph quickly became
obsolete.
