Context for Nursing Care

This area provides me with an opportunity to observe how my career as a

nurse has developed over time. I found it interesting to revisit the path which led

me to becoming a nurse. Inclusion of my area of service learning facilitates my

assessment of how I am giving back to my community. How has my service

learning experience affected the nursing care I provide during my time on the job?

The first item I placed in this section was one of my metacognitive journals

from my first semester. This paper gave a synopsis of how I chose to become a

nurse by default. The journal describes my coming to terms with this career choice.

The second item in this section is a paper from my community assessment project.

I particularly enjoyed performing the literature search for this topic. This group

project was very applicable to me as I work with surgical oncologists almost every

day and see the ramifications of primary cigarette smoking.

I have continued to perform my ski patrol duties during this program up until

this last semester. After initially viewing the syllabus I knew I needed to take the

winter off. This decision was expected by my patrol director as I had forewarned

him this might occur. He appreciates the time I have given over the last seven

consecutive years. I have increased my involvement over the last two years with ski

patrol by acting as an instructor during our fall refresher sessions. This role has

given me the opportunity to share my medical knowledge and impart to other

patrollers the importance of proper assessment skills and achieving a connection

with our patients.
