Abstract
volunteered with the National Ski patrol for the last five years and feel my position in this
agency fulfills a definite need for the public as well as myself. As a member of the
National Ski Patrol I pay dues every year. The sixty to one hundred hours I put in are
very rewarding and enjoyable. Each year I learn something new about first responder care
Introduction
The purpose of this community service proposal is for us as students to learn from
our experiences as we serve the needs of our community (Reisling, Allen & Hall, 2005).
I have served the Cannonsburg Ski Patrol for the last five years and have spoken to my
Patrol Director, Mike Devriendt about this project. In order for Cannonsburg winter
sports area to be open they are required to have a patrol to treat those injuries that occur
The National Ski Patrol (NSP) was founded in 1938. As skiing and other winter and
outdoor sports have become more popular over the last fifty plus years ski areas have
found it necessary to provide safety and emergency care to their patrons. The
organization has about 26,000 members providing service to about 600 areas. The NSP is
a non-profit organization that receives the majority of its financial support from
Service Learning Role: My role as a ski patroller has and will continue to be
providing on the hill first rescuer care to people with injuries. I also am responsible for
transporting patients to the patrol room for further evaluation, first aid, and possible
transport to primary emergency care facilities. In the patrol room we also advise patients
regarding their injuries; both major and minor as far as follow up care. This time gives us
the opportunity to teach patients about their probable injuries and precautions to take in
the future.
Objective / Activities
Service Proposal 4
This volunteer activity will be seen in a new light as I go through this RN to BSN
program. As I learn new ways of thinking about my career this volunteer activity will
more than likely be seen in a new light after the next two and a half years. I would
imagine that I will approach my interaction with patients while reflecting on the
therapeutic role I perform. I may find myself analyzing more my interactions in this
venue.
Evaluation
In order to evaluate my work with the NSP I think that it would be helpful to
write a brief evaluation two years from now to reflect on how my views have changed or
not regarding my service. I think it would also be helpful to get input from my patrol
director to see if he has noted any change in my role with the NSP.
