Objective: Students will be able to retell a story read to them and they will be able to retell the story while including details and showing their understanding of the text. Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. Materials: Tumblebooks.com (a program provided by me), computer hooked up to projector, art supplies for props, and student bodies! Introduction (1 min): Hello students! How are you all? Today, we are going to be recreating stories using stories we will listen to and watch from tumblebooks.com. Has anyone ever read the story: Toopy and Bino: Toopys Story? Well today we will be reading this story! Transition(1 min): Lets all move to the carpet today as we listen and watch the story on the screen! Ask students to remind you about our listening and respecting carpet guidelines. Eyes and ears on the speaker, suggestions can wait until speaker is done Activity 1(10 min): Watch this story on Tumblebooks.com. When finished ask students about key details they remember from the text. Write these details on white paper chart next to the big chair for all students to see. Transition(5 min): Okay now that we remembered some details about the text we are going to learn about and participate in a new activity! This activity is called Readers Theatre. Has anyone ever heard of a theatre? What is a theatre? Who are people who work on stage? What is an actor? Today we are going to be actors and we are going to retell this story for each other. I will now pull sticks for small groups. (pull popsicle sticks for small groups, 5 in each group). When you get back to your tables, please choose one group member to pick up the supplies you will need to make your props. Everyone will have Activity 2 (10 min): Students will get into groups and begin planning their theatre act. Transition (1 min): Okay everyone, I am going to have each group show their theatre for the rest of the class I will pick popsicles to see which group goes first. Activity 3(30 min)(Pick and allow them 5 minutes each to present). Conclusion( 1-2 min): Did we like this activity? What did we learn while doing this? Was this a good activity to show others what you remembered from a story? What different things did we notice in each group?
