WORK INSTRUCTION

Dye Penetrant Test

1. Purpose and Scope
This Work Instruction is prepared as guidance in conducting Dye Penetrant Test, with florescent
solvent.
2. Work Instruction
2.1

Make sure that the surface to be tested is perfectly fine and free from dirty, sand, oil, etc.

2.2

Do pre-claning by wiping the surface using cloth wipe. Dont use cloth wipe from cotton. Let the
surface dry after cleaning.

2.3

Start penetrant test, either by spraying or polished with a brush. Take care to avoid excess
penetrant that causing the accumulation in the cavity and the grooves. If there is excess, reduce
by wiping with the cloth that can absorb.

2.4

Leave it until the penetrant dwell time is reached, to get the maximum penetration. Make sure that
during this process period the surface is still in wet condition.

2.5

After the dwell time is reached, wipe the penetrant on the surface with dry cloth. Clean up with
cloth wipe evenly and clean from remaining penetrant.

2.6

Damp the cloth wipe by cleaner and clean the remaining ex-penetrant carefully.

2.7

Dont use cleaner escessively, or wiping with excessive pressure during conducting of step 2.6.

2.8

Make sure the drying and surface being tested before using developer.

2.9

Shake the can of developer evenly until to be hear the sound click.

2.10 Use the developer by sprayed on the material being tested with the distance of 30 cm, evenly.
2.11 Leave it until developer timing is reached and developer is dry.
2.12 Conducting interpretation to the tested material.
3. Recording Test Result
3.1

Conducting inspection on the tested material surface. Measure if there is an indication.

3.2

Record every indication appears and sketches the form, size and position of indication in test
report.

4. Cleaning After The Test

4.1

Conducting cleaning of remaining test by spraying the cleaner, and use the cloth to wipe the
tested material surface.

4.2

Make sure that the surface that is already tested is free from remaining penetrant or developer.

4.3

Clean the tools used and put them back to the tool box.

4.4

Put the tested material at the appropriate area.

5. Acceptance Criteria
5.1

For API Spec. 6D, all surfaces to be examined shall be free of :

1. Relevant Linear Indication that having a length greater than three times the width.
2. Relevant rounded indication equal or greater than 3/16 in. (5 mm).
3 Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 1/16 in. (1.5 mm) or less (edge
to edge).

5.2

For API Spec. 600 and 602 indications acceptable shall be in accordance with tabel-1.
1. Linear indication must be separated by a distance greater than the length of an acceptable
indication. Linear indication is one with length excess of 3 times the width.
2. Four or more rounded indications in a line separated by 0.6 in (1.5 mm) or less edge-to-edge are
unacceptable. Rounded indications are those that are not defined as linear indication.
