ROCK AND ROLL: THE FACTS

Rock takes its roots in Rock and Roll, a genre that came into being in the 1950s.
It evolved from the waves of music that took influence from African-American
cultures, such as Blues and Jazz.
Rock and Roll came about through increasing use of the electric guitar as the
lead instrument and less frequent use of saxophones and pianos.
Rock and Roll was mainly popular amongst the Caucasian communities of
Western Europe and America.
Bands like Buddy Holly and the Crickets and solo artists Like Elvis Presley and
Don McLean lead the way in developing rock and roll music.
Buddy Holly and the Crickets were credited with integrating rock and roll music
into African American communities after playing in front of a mainly black
audience and winning them over with their music.
Elvis Presley is arguably the most famous rock and roll artist of all time and he
gained the title King of rock.

INDIE ROCK
Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in
the 1980s. Indie rock was extremely diverse, with subgenres that include
sections like indie pop.
Indie rock is largely global having listeners from all around the world due to its
relatability and emotional attachment that it gives to the listener.
It began in the mid-1980s where the term indie was used to describe the music
produced on post-punk labels.
However, the term indie rock became associated with the bands and genres
that remained dedicated to their independent status and credibility.
In the early 2000s, a new group of bands began to emerge into the mainstream.
The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Vines.
Our band, The Neighbourhood. They also made a climb into popular music
culture as an indie rock band with their most recent songs like Honest racking up
7 million YouTube views.
In the UK this was reflected by bands such as The Libertines, The Fratellis and
Franz Ferdinand.
