Music hall
A specific form of popular music that developed as a result of the rapid industrialization and
urbanization. Were originally bars which provided entertainment, in the form of music.
Music hall stars included: Marie Lloyd, Harry Champion, George Formby etc...
Dance Bands (Big Bands) 1925 to 1946 The most popular form of
music in the UK. It was compared to American jazz. Famous people:
Ted Heath, Al Bowlly and Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson.
1970s
The first big new sound of the 1970s was “Glam Rock”, the main figures of this
were David Bowie, Elton John and of course Gary Glitter.
1980s
Punk rock diversified into genres such as Gothic rock, The Cure and New Wave. By
the end of the 1980s, alternative rock split into multiple genres: dream pop, shoe
gazing and space rock. And a uniquely British spin on house music, known as acid
house. Early pioneers of this sound were 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald, LFO and
Orbital.
1990s
American bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam inspire the British alternative rock
scene. The British charts were dominated by Britpop, bands such as Blur, Suede and
Oasis. Pop group the Spice Girls became one of the biggest British music exports of
the decade. In the late 1990s and into the 2000s, melodic British rock groups such as
Radiohead and Coldplay achieved great critical and commercial success.
American Music
The music of the United States reflects the country's multi-ethnic population. Rock and roll,
country, rhythm and blues, jazz, and hip hop are among the country's most internationally-
renowned genres. The blues is a genre of African American folk music, it is part of a continuum of
musical styles like country, jazz, ragtime, and gospel . Music from the United States has become
increasingly known across the world.
1940s & 50s. The major strands were rock and roll. Bill Haley & His Comets, were the
first to succeed. Elvis Presley began singing rock, R&B and rockabilly songs in a
devoted black style. He quickly became the most famous and best-selling artist..
The 1960s. Music became innately tied up into causes, opposing certain ideas,
influenced by the sexual revolution, feminism, Black Power and environmentalism.
Country music in the 1960s was dominated by the Nashville Sound until Merle
Haggard changed the national country sound to the Bakersfield Sound.
The 1970s saw the development of power pop, the marriage of glam and heavy
metal to form glam metal and the emergence of disco. By the late 1970s, disco
success through the movie ‘’Saturday Night Fever.’’
• The Mercury Prize, formerly the Mercury Music Prize and currently known as the Nationwide
Mercury Prize for sponsorship reasons, is an annual music prize awarded for the best album from the
United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland. It is often observed that bands who are nominated for, or indeed
win the prize experience a large increase in album sales, particularly for the lesser known nominees.
Nominations are chosen by a selected panel of music executives in the music industry in the UK and the
Republic of Ireland. The Mercury Prize also has a reputation for being awarded to outside chances rather
than the favorites

It is the most well known form of professional theatre to the American general
public and most lucrative for the performers, technicians and others involved in
putting on the shows.
Broadway theatre, or a Broadway show, refers to a performance, usually a play or musical, presented in
one of the thirty-nine large professional theatres with 500 seats or more located in the Theatre District of
the New York City borough of Manhattan.

It is a district in Los Angeles, California, situated west-northwest of Downtown
Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of
movie studios and movie stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a
metonym for the cinema of the United States. Today much of the movie
industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbank and the Los
Angeles Westside but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects,
