Rice is a type of grass. It is usually
grown in flooded fields because the
water controls weeds and pests.
The edible portion of the rice plant is
part of the seed.

How to Grow

You can grow rice by following this
procedure:
1. Sprinkle 10 rice seeds in the
bottom of a clear plastic cup.
2. Fill the cup to the 5 cm level with
clean water.
3. Keep the temperature above
71F.
4. After the seeds germinate, put
them In a large plastic tub filled to
the 5 cm mark with soil.
5. Fill the tub with water until the
water is 5 cm above the soil level.
6. Keep the water level at 5 cm
throughout the growth cycle.
7. Provide growing plants with
plenty of sunlight.

than half of the world! Rice is
packed with carbohydrates. This
means it is a kind of food that gives
you energy. In many countries,
people eat rice for breakfast, lunch
and dinner. People in Asia have
grown and eaten rice for more than
5,000 years.

About 90% of the worlds rice is
grown in Asia. China, India, and
Indonesia are the top rice producers.
There are a few states in the United
States that grow rice, including
California, Mississippi, Arkansas,
Louisiana, and Texas.
