Dear Parents of Jack Jackter intermediate School,
We want to make you aware of an event that happened this morning. At the beginning of the schoo!
day, around 9:15 AM, we had a third grader, who was transitioning frorn the literacy lab to his classroom
walk out one of our recess door s and into our fenced and gated playground area. The student found a
hole in the fence and crawled through. We were alerted quickly by the classroom teacher that the
student had not returned to his classroom. We began a building search and the police were notified.
‘Our student resource officer was extensively involved in handling this situation with us. As we were
notifying the police, 2 parent in the community noticed that a child was not on school property and
began questioning and assisting him. She also contacted the police for assistance. Our school resource
officer was able to safely return the student to us.
{As a result of this event, we are asking teachers to once again review safe behaviors with their students.
To reinforce this important message, we ask you to please have a discussion with your child about
traveling through the building safely and why itis important that your child should never leave without
being dismissed with an approved adult. We have also requested that the Parks and Recreation
Department repair the fence and reinforce it.
As is our practice, we are utilizing this rare but serious situation to examine our procedures and school
security. The safety of our students is always our paramount concern
Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.
Sincere
Deborah T. Sandberg ye
