Abstract
Gastric cancer is the fifth leading cancer globally, and is responsible for thousands of deaths each
year. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacteria that affects the gastric mucosa and is a welldocumented carcinogen. Currently, there is an insufficient amount of research to determine what
treatment options are most effective for H. pylori eradication for the prevention of gastric cancer
and gastritis. Some evidence has reported that H. pylori eradication, when compared to noneradication can decrease a persons risk for developing gastric carcinoma and gastritis. This
Limited integrative literature review (LILR) evaluates current research to get a more accurate
depiction of the effect of H. pylori is gastric cancer risk. Seven articles were found to have met
the inclusion criteria after searching CINAHL, Medline and Cochrane databases. Of the seven
articles, five addressed the risk for developing gastric cancer. In these studies, gastric cancer
developed in 0.86%-1.6% of participants who had H. pylori eradication therapy, compared to
1.4%-4% in the non-eradication group. The studies evaluated suggest that H. pylori eradication
can potentially decrease the risk of gastric cancer development. Two studies evaluated the effects
of H. pylori eradication on gastritis. The studies resulted in between 45% and 80% reductions in
gastritis with non-eradication of H. pylori and eradication, respectively. Research supports that
the eradication of this bacteria significantly decreases gastritis across all studies.
