LESSON: Double digit plus single digit addition without regrouping

Learning Target:
Students will solve double digit plus single digit addition without
regrouping using a four step strategy.
Lesson Objective:
When given 10 single digit plus double digit addition problems without
regrouping students will solve with 100% accuracy.
Data will come from:
Exit slip at the end of the lesson that has ten double digit plus single
digit addition problems without regrouping.
Materials
: exit slips (provided by teacher), worksheet (provided by teacher), pencils, steps
of strategy written on a note card for each student on back of note card place value chart
(provided by teacher), whiteboard, whiteboard markers, whiteboard erasers.

Present and model

the first problem shown on the whiteboard: 13+6. Show four
step strategy, add ones, add tens.
o Do the same for 64+2. .
o Do same for 43+5..
o Do same for 31+8.
We do the same for the the problem: 46+3. Give students time to think then have
them hold fingers up one for ones place, two for tens place, ask which do we add
first?
o Model 22+6.
o Model 51+7.
o Model 17+1.
Once students understand the concept of rounding, give students 4 problems and
check for understanding by having them solve these problems on their whiteboards.
Do one problem at a time.
o 34+2, 63+3, 74+4 , 81+7.
Hand out worksheets.
Read 1 problem from the worksheet; give students time to work together to solve
problem.
Check student answers by listening to them talk. Have students show answer on
whiteboard.
o If any students answers wrong, go over the problem together.

 While working on worksheets, students may help others with problems. If students
need help, they may call the teacher or student helper over. Students may use their
strategy note card.
Hand out exit slip
and have students complete it independently without using the
strategy card or any other aid.
Transition back into class.
